1995 Legacy sedan AWD 5-speed Odd sound
Hey guys!
I am a nissan 240 owner, but I am looking into buying a legacy as a daily driver.
I found a 95 AWD sedan with 206,000 miles on it... quite a lot. So I test drove it today and the motor felt really strong. There were two things I noticed that I didn't like.
1: when shifting grears, the transmission felt kinda sloppy. Almost like I could wiggle the shifter around.
2: When I would approach a light and let off the accelerator but not brake... just coast... I would hear a loud whirring sound (not grinding) but definitely vibrations coming from the front of the car. The guy said it had something to do with the way the boxer motor is "engine braking". I've never heard engine braking sound like that so I don't know if this is normal for boxers.
Have any of you ever heard a similar sound or have any idea what this could be? I am just trying to figure out if it is something to be worried about.
Thanks.

It sounds like the engine and transmission mounts could be toast, so when you're engine braking, it's moving around a lot. It could also be an exhaust leak...
As for the shifter, they do get pretty sloppy in their old age, more worn bushings and whatnot.
That's a lot of miles, so if you're serious about it, make an effort to get the best deal on it possible. You'll be spending a few dollars to get it where you want it.

So I took it to my friend's shop this morning to have him take a look at it. He seems to think that it is a transmission problem because the sound goes away when you press the clutch. He guesses its a bearing in the tranny in which case a new transmission is in order. He also said just what you said about the slop in the shifter... that it needs a new bushing which isn't expensive.
So, I told the guy I couldn't take it for more than $1300 and he said he'd think about it. I guess I'll have to wait and see what he wants to do, although I'm not so sure that even 1300 is in my best interest.
