Laquer Thinner for car detailing?? Help me.
I took my car to a detaling place and they told me that my car was in bad shape due to the sap and dried leaves that have kind of embedded themselves in my paint. They told me it is goign to take them 5 hours to do the car.
However what scares me is that they told me the only thing they found that was working to get the spots and stains and sap out of the paint was varnish thinner.
I don't knwo enought about detaling but it seems like varnish thinner is really extream and that there should be a different way to do it.
Does anybody know of people using varnish thinner to do this type of thing on a car???
He said it was goign to be a 3 step process.

when i got lacquer thinner on my paint it didn't seem to do much harm. just make sure you wax thoroughly afterwards.
they make many products that are specifically designed for sap and stains on cars, they say that none of these things worked?

I do not know what they tried. However I have tried many products and none worked so I beleive them to a degree. As long as they do not stirip all my paint away with this laquer thinner I am ok with it.

I didn't use it for that, I was cleaning off some overspray of sound deadening material. I figure varnish thinner can't be more harsh than laquer thinner, though.
I also used De-solv-it (sp?) when I debadged the trunk and that didn't do much harm. Just try to avoid "scrubbing" with the solvents and I think you won't see any ill effects.

laquer thinner does no harm to the car's clear coat from what i've seen. my car got spraypainted overnight half a year ago and i easily took it off with thinner. just make sure you detail the car afterwards though.

Yeah they are a small shop. They are youngert guys woirkign there I woudl say about 25 to 3years old. But they are a shop and are listed in the phne book and all. I saw some of their other cars and they looked good and they were busy on a bike finishing up on 45K worth of chrome. SO I assume they know what they are doing.
I am goign to let them do their thing. They said it is goign to take a 3 step process and they will be detailing after the laquer bath.

If i were you i would ask around and see who people in your area recommend, the more rep a place is the better, i had the same problem that you have, one with my old car and i used a cleaner like they said they will use and i ended up buffing the sh*t out of the paint with a color wax and then some high polish wax just to get it back to what it was, and now with my new subie i got some sap on it and what you need to do is let the car cool in a shaded place, maybe inside, wash the car really really well, shammi it dry, and take any of the sap that you see and pick what you can off, then go buy some "Compound 7, auto clear coat finish" and rub gently onto the car where the sap and marks are, this WILL NOT MESS UP THE CLEAR COAT! once done again wash where you used it maybe the whole car to be sure, and shammi it again, then get some good wax such at mothers and wax it pretty good, never had a problem with mine since, and getting more sap off of it later is easy.
Or again look for a rep detailer and see what they would get for it, they said that they would do this to the car -
-Hand wash twice
-steam clean the engine and under carraige and interior
-detail under the hood
-armoral the interior
-wax and buff the exterior
-clean the rims and tires inside and out
-clean glass and etc
all for 190.00 done in about 8 hrs
let me tell you i see their work, it comes out better than the day you bought it, looks and shines and smells better than the way the dealership gave it to you and it worth every penny

Well I had it done. They did a good job but I am not 100% pleased. The outside was much better. Shinny again. However I noticed some nicks and scratcheds that I had not noticed before. But that could just be me. What pissed me off was there was one spot on the roof that is still marked up and the trim inside the doors was not cleaned. That pisses me off. But they did what I needed. I can do anyhting further and keep it from gettign to that state again.
