Steering wheel correction without airbag deployment.

I have a quick question. I've worked on steering wheels before, but never any with airbags. What are the odds of the airbag deploying in my WRX while I'm taking apart the steering wheel? Keep in mind that I will have the negative battery cable disconnected for a good ten minutes before I start the process and during. I don't want any lost teeth or having to pay for a spendy airbag replacement. Will it only deploy if I am knocking it around, or is it sensitive?

Also, the only way for the "airbag" light to come on my dash is if I actually disconnect the plug in the steering wheel, right?

Thank you for your time and patience,
Smitty

What exactly is it that you want/need to do?

Once you disconnect the negative terminal pump the brakes up and also wait 10 or more minutes to make sure all power has been drained. Unscrew the 2 Torx screw and wiggle the cover off and then disconnect. That simple. More extensive instructions are on www.scoobymods.com

Thank you, Flanders. I've looked on Scoobymods and found what I needed I just was not sure if the airbag could still deploy after I have disconnected the battery. It didn't go into detail about that.

Mulder, I just replaced my steering rack bushings and it did not correct my steering wheel back to center. My car has been bumped a few times and I'm sure the service shops have already tampered with the steering wheel and it's just not sitting quite straight. So I am going to take it off and re-center it. The car has been aligned and most everything checked out so I am pretty sure that this is what it is.

I just installed a MOMO wheel in my car. If all electricity is drained you will be fine. The important thing is to not take off the bolt that holds on the steering wheel, just loosen it quite a bit. It is true that when the wheel comes loose it will go flying. I would have knocked out some teeth if I took the bolt off.

Also, use a sharpie to mark a line where the teeth are now. I didn't get my wheel on exactly straight so I have to take off the airbag, loosen the bolt, mark a line and rotate it one notch clockwise and bolt it all in again.

Thank you very much Flanders for the tips. That gave me confidence enough, I think I should be okay now.

Thank you!

I took it off this afternoon and realigned it one spline over and it's straight now. Very simple to do. And no airbag blowing up. Thanks for all the help!
