Smoking tail lights
Does anyone have a good description of the process for smoking tail lights. What products are recommended for it? And how do you get remove the tails on a BE?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The centre piece is easy. There are hex nuts all across the inside of the trunk lid that holds the piece in. All you need to do is loosen those 6 (?), unplug the two cables and the piece pops off.
The tails are abit trickier, you'll have to pull back the fibreglas insulation in the trunk. The stuff is really rigid so pulling it back to get to the lights is somewhat of a challenge. Start by taking a flathead screwdriver and work it in at a corner. Then slowly pry the fibreglas up and over the rubber surround of the trunk. When you've got a comfortable space made you can ease the fibreglas off the trunk and you'll see that each of the tails is held in place by three more of those hex nuts. Loosen those, unplug the cables and you're free.
As for smoking it, you can try to bake the lights to get the adhesive gooey enough to take the two pieces apart. Then paint and reattach them. Im sorry I cant help you there as I had went the JDM tails swap route.
Should've taken pics when I did my swap as I just reread what I wrote and it seems quite longwinded. My bad.

If you spray from the inside, would it stay stay red and orange since (looking from outside) the tint is going to be behind the red/orange? When I sprayed the orange signal on my BD, I thought about that too and decided to spray the outside instead.

when we "tinted" the tails on my old car all we did was mask off the rear end (as the screws on the light housings were warpped to all hell) and lightly used spray until we reached our desired darkness. As long as you do very light coats you can maintain the shine on your tails and it will look pretty clean. However, The guy a couple of posts up seems to have a better plan.

I'm not too fond of the idea of taking the tails apart by baking them. I like the idea of spraying the outside better.
Does anyone have a good product recommendation and where to get it? Preferably spray on.

your local hobby shop should have these small cans of transparent black spray. in VA it is $4 a can. If it is a small hobby shop then they should just carry quality products. I would just talk to someone in the store. My spray "tint" has lasted one summer and last winter withh all the salt and still looks great.

Here is what we did for my Probe's Tails:
Remove the tail lights
Go to a place with no wind and minimal dirt (your garage with the door cracked would work.)
You'll probably need 3-4 cans
Spray very light coats and let dry for 10-15 mins.
Come back and repeat until you get your desired tint
If you are going for pretty much black you may need some extra cans.
Good Luck and have fun!
