Replace side view mirror guts?
Hi all,
Sorry for the really boring question, but has anyone replaced just the guts from their side view mirror? A neighbor and his kid were playing ball and, guess what - they smashed my passenger side mirror. They were nice and told me so immediately. I managed to track down a used mirror, but had to buy the whole housing. Only problem is the housing is green and my '97 Legacy Outback Limited is red.
I've loosened up all the screws that I can get to, and the guts kind of jiggle around a bit, but I don't want to break anything trying to get the mirror out of there.
I'm trying to save my neighbor some money, so any thoughts are appreciated.
cheers,
Zamboni!

I disassembled my mirrors to install JDM power folding internals.
Its not that complicated, but you have to be careful with the mirror. Basically, you need to stick a thin, but long knife inbetween the mirror and the black plastic 'housing' around the mirror. THe mirror is attached with double sided tape(or silicone type material), so you'll need to cut that to get the mirror out. Again, very careful, as too much pressure or flexing of the mirror will shatter it.
Once the mirror is off, its pretty self explanitory: 1 center screw holding the black mirror housing in, take this off to expose about 3 other scres holding all of the internals in.
On the reinstall side, slip the mirror back on carefully after reassembly and you might want to use more double-sided tape/silicone to make sure it doesn't go anywhere.
