I just bought an STi that has a driver-side airbag. The extra weight and overall bulkiness of the airbagged steering wheel is annoying, and I want to switch to a non-SRS steering wheel. Having airbags in Japan doesn't get you an insurance discount, nor is it grounds to fail the car for an inspection if they are removed. Anyways, if I were to get in a crash that was bad enough to cause the airbag to deploy, I might as well die, because that would mean my dream car is totalled and there would be no reason to go on living after that.

I just need to know if there are any dangers of this thing blowing up in my face if I tried to remove it myself, and after it is removed, is the AIR BAG light going to stay lit until the bag gets replaced or I pull a fuse out? Any information would be most helpful! Thanks!

 

If you unplug the power to it, I am guessing it wont pop. Page AB-21 in the English service manual.

Maybe if you explain how you came to the conclusion of why I'm dumb, I might believe you.

What? Because I want to remove a "safety" item from my car? Please... you may look like my mother, but you don't need to sound like her too. Tell me why I need it in a country where the posted speed limit never tops 45 MPH, 90% percent of all accidents here are side or rear impact, and I already use a 4-point harness in conjunction with the stock restraint system. Don't worry... I do my homework when it comes to calculating the risks and benefits.

I read a lot of your posts before. Didn't expect something like this to come from you (Now I sound like YOUR mother! Oh, the hypocrisy!). It's ok though. Now, if there is any help you can give me on how to remove this airbag SAFELY (that means NO GUESSES.... guessing on how to dismantle an explosive device is REALLY DUMB!), I would appreciate it. And, no, I don't have the English service manual. Perhaps you could tell me where to get it, and if it would apply to my vehicle or not?

undo the battery and let it sit for a few minutes to let all the juice out of the car. After that unbolt it and switch out to the new one of your choice, simple to do.

At any rate: diconnect neg. battery, next remove airbag fromwheel, usually allen bolts on the back of the wheel, now remove the nut holding the wheel onto the spline. Now you'll have to have an adaptor to use whatever wheel you plan on using. Like Momo-if they don't make one for your specific year, maybe an older (99-01) will work. Main thing to do is diconnect the neg. battery so it doesn't explode it your face. I would save the airbag, though, they are very expensive $1000.+

 

Ok, big lack of understanding here....

1. The instructions on the Willans harness RECOMMEND using the stock seatbelt with the harness. Read on....

2. Why am I going to ask a Japanese tuner to remove an airbag for me? Thats easily a four or five-hundred dollar job for something that should be done by me for free. And I can remove a steering wheel....Im asking about the airbag. Getting an oil change here is about $65.

2b. I was simply pointing out how Americans always feel like they have to prove something to each other, even to total strangers, especially through use of put-downs. Japanese respect each other, until there is reason to not respect someone.

3. No, I have only done things to make the world great. I spent 6 months in Saudi Arabia launching jets during Iraqi Freedom, without beer or ****, just so you can turn on your TV everyday and not have AL Jazeera as the only channel you are allowed to watch. Im an American from California, trapped in Japan as long as the Air Force says I am. Cool thing is, I have 2 WRXs and and STi Type R, which makes being here really fun, and worth all the bulls**t. Where else in the world can you have that on a Sergeant's pay budget?

4. Read no. 1 again. And I never wore 2 seatbelts (youre right, that would be dumb). But Im sure it makes people feel better about giving me advice on something that could potentially cause somebody to get injured in the future, right?

I read somewhere that wiring a 4 Ohm resistor across the airbag leads will prevent the airbag light from coming on. Airbags are nice to have, but seatbelts save lives.
