Search for headlight cleaning over at http://bbs.legacycentral.org

The 90-99 Legacies in the US had marginal headlight plastic, at best, and you'll be able to find some good tips there on how to make them look new again.

Angry Reason for Dome Lenes 97 GT milky / pearl effect

Hi Anyone else found this problem with the lenes it's self becoming foggy / milky, I did the mission on it (3 hours each light) and pulled the hole thing apart and found that the dome lenes inside had come loose in it's housing the rattling braking up the outer rim of the glass turning it into a fine powder which covered the lens blocking the light and making it have a pearl effect no polishing of the outer plastic will help this problem. you will need a heat gun and lots of patients to get them apart. Good luck Kris

Red face Here's how I did it (pictures)

I cleaned up the lenses on my 96 L using the following steps:
I started by wet sanding with 320 which knocks off the yellow and any of the old clearcoat. The clearcoat is the flaky stuff, but the exposure lens plastic is what yellowed. Then I went to 600 and 800 and finally 1500. All sanding was done in straight lines - not in circles. I sanded horizontally and then vertically and then diagonally. Polishing was performed with 3M polishing compound and a sponge wheel mounted to a drill. This really made a big difference.

Once the lenses were polished up, I wiped them down to remove polish residue in prep for a new clear coat. I used an acrylic enamel clear in multiple layers to build up a new protective layer. The problem with leaving the lens polished is that it WILL turn yellow again. The clearcoat, while not UV filtering, does prevent oxidation of the lens. My clearcoat had lots of orange peel which I eliminated by repeating the wet-sanding and polishing at a much more mild level.
