I think he's talking about a remote trunk release. The manual trunk release doesn't use a solenoid i think. It's a mechanical linkage that pulls the lock to open the trunk lid. That's how it was on my old car anyway.
I plan on getting a remote trunk release eventually too, most likely with an aftermarket car alarm.
