ARG stipped bolt on stock spoiler... help
Thought I would ask here... got my wing spacers today.... to make a LONG 4 hour frustrating story short this is what happened... I took off the stock spoiler put on my wing risers and when I started to turn the passenger side back screw on the spoiler it kept spinning and spinning and spinning.... ARG! So now I am at a stump on what to do I tried jb weld and that stuff blows.... It doesn't look like you can remove the spoiler or break it in two pieces... so my main question is how would I get the screw out so I could possibly put a new on in?
Or anyone have advice on how I can make this work so that my spoiler doesn't fly off? 3 out of 4 screws holding the spoiler down is alright but I just don't feel safe about it. My rex is a sonic yellow one so it came stock with the stock spoiler... I DO NOT have the metal cable that everyone talks about incase the wing flies off, rather I have what looks almost like a slide screw that slides into the bottom of the wing and you actually push it down and it snaps into the trunk of the car... so if I wanted to I could just snap the stock wing on the car and not worry about it, but for as much as I spent on these risers I REALLY want to use them or at least see what they look like on the car...
Thanks,
-Nigel

I'm assuming you don't have access to a dremel or cant get to the screws with it? you could try a nut breaker bar thing, I think you can buy them at OSH but not sure if it'd work, depends on how the screw is. You culd also try drilling off the screw, but that can be kinda hard especially if its spinning. But if u jam it w/ a screwdriver + clamp thing, the drill out the center, u could probably break it pretty easy. GL

I do have a dremel... I was able to get the nut off of the threaded bolt by holding vise grips to the threaded bolt and using a socket to get the nut off but here is the problem... for some reason, I don't understand why subaru would do this but the threaded bolt that is in the spoiler is not really attached to anything, it's held in by what looks like a plastic piece... so if you turn it too much like I did it just turns the ENTIRE threaded bolt along with the plastic piece that is holding it... I'm just at a loss as to how to get the nut on now on this stupid threaded bolt that keeps spinning....

Option B. Line your spoiler with double sided tape.
I have a 22B replica that broke a bolt. I just ran a solid edge of double sided tape all along the edges. Protected trunk from scuffing and kept water out too!

I don't kno if its possible, but you culd try getting epoxy on the plastic piece that is spinning altho u'd need to be careful to avoid getting it on the threads
I'm slightly confused tho, are you trying to get the spoiler on or off?
If the plastic thing that spins a lot, and all you want to do is stop it form spinning, you could, tho i'd advise against it, drill a small diagonol (sp) hole into it through the spoiler (where it culdn''t be seen, and put a small screw or nail so it holds it in place through the spoiler.
Or maybe you could try taking it back claiming its defective!

On a side note huck doesn't the 22b spoiler use 14 mounting holes?

Right now I have jb weld drying on the one stud to at least hopefully stop it from turning... I took the spoiler off... then I added the risers but when I started to screw in the nut on the threaded bolt it started to turn the ENTIRE bolt instead of just getting tighter... Might think about that drilling throught the plastic piece maybe...hmm
I also thought of this... drilling a couple small holes into the bottom side of the spoiler then taking 50lb or stronger fishing line since that is very strong and tieing it to the holes I drilled or at least looping it through, then drilling holes through the spacers then running it to the trunk... would this be a good thought or would double sided tape as said above be better?
Thanks so far!

Is the tape actually red? Is there a thickness that I have to look for or does it already come in a standard size? Also where would be the best place to get it?
Thanks again :-)

Any paint store that carys automotive paints will have it , usualy in two colors , white or dark gray . The half inch stuff on a full roll will run around 30 bucks but its uses are endless and you will always find a pinch that it will get you out of.
Your wing sounds like an after market model judging by your description , but either way we must solve your problem. Huck is dead on , the double sided tape will hold it secure with the three others.
Caution must be taken with your other three as you have found out , you do not want to tourque on those hand snug/tight is all you realy need.as for the one that is boogered,
your idea of drilling on each side of it is a good start but in place of the fishing line i would consider a fiberglass repair kit.
Your holes would have to be large enough to work in them with tweesers and far enough apart to allow a good adhesion surface.
Cutting strips of glass sheet long enough to go from one hole over the bolt head and to the othe hole with plenty sticking out of each end , I would proceed to douse them in the supplied resin and work the strips over the bolt and out the holes.
To hold your bolt in place run a nut over a washer and snug it up then tape the bolt to avoid thread damage.
Once everything is cured up trim the excess coming out of the holes and sand it smooth.
Fiberglass repair kits are available at all home improvement centers , but grab the good , automotive kit stuff while you're at the automotive paint supply house getting your double sided tape .
You may have succeeded with the JB weld , in which this reply would have been a complete waste of my time while I could have been watching **** , but we are all here to help !

Thanks for all the help guys...
Got the double sided tape on there and it is holding pretty well! I was able to fix the one stripped screw using the jbweld. I'm kinda sad about the fitment on these spacers... there are some spaces/small gaps where it meets up with the trunk and wing... I'm sure the zero sports are like that too... why they can't be perfect I don't know...
cohlineman:
My wing is the standard stock with that you can get on a rex... I think mine is just different because the wing came standard on sonic yellow ones... I kinda like the idea that there are two "snaps" on the wing so that it actually would never blow off... took me a second to figure out that I had to PULL directly up to unsnap the wing from the trunk.
Thanks again guy, I will get some pics hopefully tomorrow...
