Alternator? What to get and where to get it?

My alternator is shot and I just went over 36K so no more warranty. I am goign to need to purchase a new alternator.

SO what I am looking for is information on what a good alternator is to get to replace the factory one- where to get it and what pricesx I am looking at.

I am also looking for information on how to properly remove the alternator and install a new one. IF it is too much then I guess I will have a local shop do it. But if I can do it myself I will.

Please let me know what you guys and girls know.

I have no idea but it happend a while ago. THink it occured when I put these after market headlights on. I thought it was the lights but I just went back to stock lights and the alternator is still messed up.

What happens is if I turn the headlights on and the AC with the stero or defroster my voltage drops below 12V and eventually the battery will drain and the car will stall. It is ok at speed but at a stand still with lots of electric demand it drops out.

Check with your subaru dealer to see how much a new alternator is going to cost. I think its something you should be able to do on your own. kind of a bolt on thing.

This alternator is the same as others alternators so probably is damage a little bit cuz is still working.,remove your alternator and take to an electromechanic for a check out or if you have a friend with electronic knowledge he can check with a digital multimeter the rectifiers that are simple diodes semiconductors and the regulator is another semiconductor probably are damaged. for this two different parts you can get a replacement. The other parts the stator and the rotor are very difficult to get damage so discard this parts.
the regulator and rectifiers are cheaper compares with a brandnew or replacement alternator.

voyager2000 - Can you explain that in more detail. I am thinking, according to what others have said, that the Diode might be bad. The thing works for the most part but like I said when at a stop and under a larger demand it drops below 12 V. I do not understand why but I pulled the batttery cable while the car was running and then put on all the electrical equipment and when I finally put on the radio the car stalled.

Can you explain in detail how I would replace parts of the alternator verses the entire thing and what kind of costs we are looking at for parts to full replacment?

...Ok here again .,things have been change....????!! I found an schematic of the alternator:now you can identify the components.

1.alternator
2.voltage regulator
3.bearings
4.stator
5.rotor
6.brushes
7.rectifier
The price of the components ,rectifiers and regulator are high
Check for yourself in the link
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...=7&catalogid=1
in the link there's the price for the alternator and for each of the components
and as I said you need an electromechanic so he can test what of the component/s is/are damage.

as I toll you is the same as other cars so just Bcuz is impreza the price is high.
ps:the regulator in many cases come with the brushes joined.

Those prices are riduculius. I mean that is out of this world 500 dollars just for the alternator not including labor???

There has to be an aftermarket alternator that we can use. There has got to be another way. It is silly to me that it would cost that much. I had to get a alternator replaced on an old 300Z Nissian and that only cost 240 dollars or so. What the heck

I am having the same problem, I brought it in for warranty and they blamed it on my aftermarket accessories. This has been the only decent thing I could find but i'm not sure if it will work on my 02 RS its for WRX

Interesting. That is a thought. IT is expensive however. Do you know how much the factory alternator puts out in AMps???

I got a woute from my dealer that it would be around 310 bucks for the part and labor for a new factor alternator. But if there is a big difference I would rather upgrade and get the bigger better alternator.

How sure are you that this would fit and how can we trust that website? I have never seen another aftermarket alternator that woudl fit a WRX.
