How To: Install an OEM Impreza WRX Turbo Heat Shield over Bellmouth Down Pipe
So I have not seen this thread on I-Club.com yet, I saw a quick writeup about how to cut it on iwsti.com, therefore I cannot take credit for that part. the next steps of the actual install were at my own pace. The entire process took about 45min-1hour with figuring out what I needed to cut and re-examining my setup I shed blood, sweat and cash over to install (the turbo upgrade)
Here it goes...
Tools Used
1- 3/8" socket wrench
1- 14mm socket
1- 12mm socket
1- 10mm socket
1- 14mm wrench
1- 10mm wrench
1- dremmel with at least 3 discs
1- file
1- bench-vice
1- black sharpie
1- Canon Rebel XS D-SLR for pictures (18-55mm f/4.5 kit lens)
1- flash light because I took a food break and it was dark out when I came back to it
1. First, you start out with an OEM heat shield, I used a vice to hold it while cutting it up, and I traced a line with a sharpie marker to make the cutout that will fit your bellmouth (or divirced) DP.
2. You can use a dremel or some sort of air powered tool to cut this up.. I used a Hacksaw to cut the straight part and realixed it would go much quicker with power-tools.
you end up with something like this... I used a bastard file to smooth the edges down, I dont want any more blood on my setup! lol
3. let your dogs come chill and roam the neighborhood..
4. Now its time to prep under the hood.. (sorry it's so dirty, but its a Subaru and every mud puddle/dirt parking lot/snow-filled parking lot I find, I tear it up!)
5. Start by removing these bolts on each side of your IC...
6. I just removed this whole black bracket because my IC is so big, made it easier to move the IC to wiggle the heat shield in without removing the entire IC unit..
7. just loosen the top T-bolt clamp and slide it down towards the throttle body/intake manifold..
8. Attach the bracket that goes inside the heat shield by removing the top two bolts on the down pipe, then reinserting and tightening them down.
9. Here is the snug fit of the OEM heat shield, free99 and it doesn't look that bad. keeps the cops away from ya as well.
NOTE: If you have an upgraded turbo, you may need to make additional cuts in the heat shield.
On my VF43 (07 STi Turbo), I had to cut one notch out of one corner of the heat shield...
Hope this helps y'all, this will assist in keeping the hot air away from your IC and keep the temps down in your engine bay with an aftermarket DP. This was my first write-up so please LMK if there's anything I need to edit! thanks!
