WTF?!
Another reason why Hawaii needs a state lottery. Well lucky for us my son will only have to endure half of the 17 days since he will be transferring to a DOD school in January.

Yup sucks for sure! My wife works at an elementary school. She's HGEA but their furloghs are coming too. Significant loss in pay and their medical just went up!. But hey, she's happy to have a job! What can you do?

No doubt that furloughs suck big time... of course it's still better than losing your job. I'm glad the hsta was more flexible than the hgea on furloughs, it'll save a bunch of teachers from the chopping block.
It's still sad though, even though all this will be having a detrimental effect on education, (which is lacking in hawaii to begin with) no one would vote to raise taxes to cover the shortfall.

You bet no one would vote to raise taxes, we're already got the highest income tax in the nation, plus property taxes, plus sales tax. It's insane how much money this state just wastes. I mean seriously, requiring cops to sit around and watch a construction project?!? The list goes on and on. If our legislature would trim just half the waste our education system would be stellar.

This is what happens when you have incompetent legislature that feels that it was NOT necessary to have an emergency session regarding these and other economic issues.
I guess they are enjoying their vacation.

^^^That's what you get for having a part-time legislature. There are very few legislators that work in their offices all year round. Most of them keep their normal jobs.
Anyways, my friend won teacher of the year for Kauai...that's about my level of knowledge of public schools in HI.

Yeah I don't know what these "benefits" people talk about being a state worker.
When I was working at CompUSA, insurance cost me $65 a month but has MUCH better coverage(0 copay on everything + better vision) than my $230 HMSA EUTF PPO. Hell most private sector insurance has employee contribution at 1.5%.
I had better life insurance, I had better retirement plan, etc. The only difference is the 21 sick days which I never use anyway. The vacations were the same.
Then how about the fact that we get paid less than what we do. In the private sector, my degree/field nets an average of 25k of what I make right now. Stability is the only reason. Well, that and telling women I work for the children.
