What are you looking for Jon?
Tape/DVD/or the new HD models?
I have the Sony DCR-DVD201 (mini DVD recorder) and although it only takes 1/2 hour per side (you can buy double sided dvd's to record up to 1 hour), it has worked flawlessly...
I do, however, like the new Hard-Drive models though...small and neat...they also have a new dvd burner that takes your feed from your camcorder and burns it directly to dvd...no messing with software or anything...

I usually check these sites out...

My review: Ive had my Sony VX2000 since 2001 and its the best purchase Ive made. Great picture, sound and reliability, never had a problem with it. My only peave is the low light visibility/exposure but the 2100 supposedly fixes this

thanks brent.
I've already gone to those sites already
I'm trying to REPLACE my Sony TRV-33 which died on me last year (christmas eve) and to repair it will be $300 or so.
I'm looking at sony since it has the touch screen and I know how to use them however the JVC (Hard drive ones) and the Panasonic (3CCD ones) look ok too.
No definate good or bad review though. It might end up being the Sony H42 for me though but it sucks at low lighting (grainy) and that will be a problem. I REALLY REALLY like the Sony HC1 but it's hella expensive ($2K) but people say it's well worth the money. I've gotta justify the cost though and use it every day for that price. If only auto-x were every week or every other week

jon if you want a truly UNBIASED review- with no motivation from advertisers- your best bet is to pick up an issue of consumer reports magazine.. or go online(if they have reviews online)
they are a non-profit organization that does honest reviews-

I guess I chose the DVD model for convenience...
Too many to choose from huh Jon...
Yeah...my wife was a little impatient with me converting the tapes to DVD so I decided to just get the direct burn DVD model...simple and easy...stills are ok, it even works well in low light...
Now though, if she wants me to edit the movies...I have to rip the DVD's into Mpegs....that is a time consuming act...can't win man...arghhhhh....

well thanks for the help. i may just look in to consumer reports
also regarding why I do NOT want DVD type is simple because of the editing restrictions. I primarily want a MiniDV type since it is reliable and you can convert from that to just about any format possible for preperation for DVD.
if anyone else knows any other places than the places that are listed let me know
I'd like to have this within the week and at latest by the end of the month (before the 27th )

Jon give me a call, <~will hook you up
Minidv > MiniDVD/HDD
Way too many bad parts about MiniDVD, ie. already encoded(editing restrictions), 30minutes only, needs finalization, battery consumption.

I have a DCR-DVD403 and while I concur with the limitations mentioned I still find it useful. I still have my older Sony MiniDV but haven't had to jump back to it yet. I'm still trying to find the right video editing program to work with encoded images, but the picture (3 Megapixal) and video quality is very good compared to the older DVD camcorders. I don't find the 30 minutes limiting unless I plan to shoot a long continuous video in which case I'll jump back to my miniDV camera. Finalization is a pain, but you can pull the video off before finalizing via a USB cable. I think the biggest issue is the encoding...
I just wish tapes had the advantages of random access. It's time consuming to stream the video to my hard drive, but you can't beat the editing capability once you get them there.
Good luck in your quest. I've always preferred Sony cameras and have never had one break on me.
