+1 for the VF34 and Cobb OTS maps until the Protune! Save money!

Thumbs up hmmm...VF-34

It sounds like you want the what we all dream of....the ultimate turbo...quick spooling with room up top...

I've driven in a few WRX's that recently upgraded to the VF-34 and VF-39 turbo's...they work very nicely on the 2.0l engines...this, together with the Pink injectors and the PDX tune produced some nice numbers at the recent Tune Day...

I think the power/safety/reliability factor for this turbo/engine combination is excellent and proven. The VF-34 spools quickly and definitely has more top end than the TD04...

The problem is, with the numbers you are looking for, while keeping the stock internals, you will be pushing your motor...and any more hp/tq...will require a bigger turbo = more lag...very top heavy...and not autocross friendly...

well, blowin the tranny would give me the excuse to go to the 6 speed.... but i would rather not for the moment lol. so is it the general consensus that stickin to the vf34 would be better for autox and be safer for the engine/drivetrain? it seems to me the vf22 doesnt really have that big of a power advantage anyway. can anyone confirm/deny this?

It's allllll in how you drive. If you beat the crap out of your car and bang through gears and flat shift and what not with the abuse then it will break right away. Adam @ LIC www.licmotorsports.com has had numerous turbos on his RS swap (jdm & usdm motors) and has used PE, FP, and various VF series turbos and is STILL on his original RS tranny and it survives through track events AND various drag strip trips. My RS was swapped by Adam and has 134k on the odo with the original tranny and still runs strong. Just don't floor it and bang through the gears. Ease it in and everything will be kosher

I'm about to get a VF35 soon and I do want to upgrade the transmission, but will have to baby the car somewhat until then after the turbo swap

I think I can vouch for quite a few of the guys that got tuned a few months back. Power numbers are one thing. And realistically, it's only bragging rights. I was more concerned about how my car FELT after the tune. The spool up was nice and definitely noticed more power up top with the 39, as compared to the TD04. It makes no sense to hit 350Hp if you don't achieve the driveability that suits that you're trying to achieve. It's a thin line between getting the power you WANT, but the response you NEED.

I put down 294whp on a 2.0L w/ a VF-34 and fmic at the first PDX tune day. Alot of others w/ VF series turbos put down good numbers as well. The response of the turbo is excellent and I don't notice that much lag at all even w/ the fmic. The VF-34 has good low to mid-range power and quick spool as compared to the VF-22. But the VF-22 has better top end. You could probably hit around your whp goals w/ the VF-34/22 w/ other supporting mods like maybe alky/water injection, boost controller, etc. An 18g/20g would most likely give you the numbers you want at the expense of more lag. But at those numbers, you're more likely to come across engine/trans and reliability issues.

VF-39/VF-34 are fine...these are not big turbo's...

Those two turbos work great with the 2.0l engines...they spool up quickly and don't overload either the motor or the tranny...

I'm sorry if I caused confusion...when I referred to bigger turbos...I meant:

20G
FPGreen
FPRed
etc.

and variation on that theme...these turbos would not be fun with the 2.0l...unless you like staying up on the high powerband...and replacing out your tranny...

well, looks like we are gonna go with the vf34. i think it should suit my power needs for now, especially runnin the stockie trans and internals. plus i dont really plan to run over 20lbs of boost which is where it seems the vf22 gains its advantage anyway. +1 for jdmness.

the vf22 and vf34 are pretty much the same until 19~20psi of boost.

also the consensuses on IHI turbo upgrades ususally don't take the VF22 into part because people always think "ball bearing turbos are better".

I believe the VF22 was on the earlier JDM STI's (pre bugeye)

Good luck on the upgrade. VF34 is the most whored out turbo... LOL

further it doesn't matter what turbo you put on the USDM 2.0L. the main point of failure is the ****ty USDM trans case that flexes. Power could kill your tranny but more likely it's the transmission flexing
