vf34 vs vf22 let the debate begin....

ok so im gonna upgrade the ol turbo in the very near future and have narrowed it to the vf34 or the vf22, but cant decide which one to go with. i would like to go with 565cc injectors cause i have a good deal on a set so i need to know if those will be sufficient for either. my goal is to make around 325-350whp (or more if its reliable) but maintain good low to midrange torque and spool characteristics. the car is my daily driver so it must be reliable. the internals and driveline will remain stock for now so they need to withstand the extra power. i will be using the car for autocross and light track days but want good streetability as well. so basically my decision will be based on reliability, streetability and as much power as can be made with the 565cc injectors and a single 255lph pump without breakin stuff. post up your wisdom!!

I don't think you can make that much WHP with either turbo =\

Yeah, I've read some threads where guys got close to that amount, but that's pushing it to almost it's max, I'd guess. On a 2.0L, I'd guess you'd need at LEAST an 18g or 20g to hit those numbers. But then at that point, you're looking into other issues like possible tranny troubles...........and no that's not Merchant St we're talking about.....HAHAHA!

its so hard to say too cause everyone has different mods to their car. i guess my question is if the power benifit of the 22 is worth the tradeoff of spool vs the 34. I have heard that the 22 makes the most power, but how much more vs the 34. if there is significantly more lag and not a large power increase then i would go with the 34. it is a street car that i like to race so i want good low end. but i also want top end so if there is a significant increase in top end but not to much difference in spool i would go 22.

Mike,

I have a vf34 and made 262whp (runnin lean/no dyno tune). Prolly i could pull 275 with a pro tune, But i love it. I don't know anyone runnin a 22. But i've heard pro's and cons for both. I'd say apples and oranges. if you're lookin to make 300's i think the 20g is a good choice.

Yeah good luck getting above 270-280ish whp outta those IHI turbos. I'm personally going with a VF35. As a cheaper alternative with the cost of a few rpms that you won't notice really...I would get a VF30. VF34 are kinda overrated imo. They do a great job, but far too pricey and I'm willing to sacrafice a few hundred rpm difference for a few hundred bucks lol. And besides...for the price of a VF34 new you could get other better higher HP turbos that will achieve your goal.

Oh yeah...just thought of this...its possible to maybe get above 300whp if you do a meth setup

well i would like to shoot for at least 300+ without sacrificing midrange or to much low end. another question is what the stock motor can reliably handle in terms of power and boost.

I was able to put down 275/262 with my VF39, as well as a few others at the last PDX Tune. I think Troy and Stacey also put down similar numbers, if not a lil bit higher....all with VF turbos. And i think Mandelle put down like almost 290 with his VF'd WRX with a FMIC also.

Meth is a great idea also, but I agree with maddhatteroo, it will be difficult to push a whole lot more out of your 2.0L

im tempted to go with the vf22, i think my budget wont let me go any bigger right now, but does anyone have any first hand power figures from that setup? also, i plan to do the tune in feb. but is there somewhere i can get a basemap for a vf22 setup for a v1 accessport until then?

Don't think Cobb has an OTS map for the 22. Another option is to go with a PDX custom AP map. I think they're like $150. You email them your mods, and they create a new base map. A bunch of guys have done this with good results.

if i remember.... the 1st person to hit 12's at HRP in a 2.0 wrx had a vf22 (or 23?)

if u want 300.. or close to it... i'd save money for the tranny..

i vote for faster spoolin' 22
