Pat. The ring and pinion that you're looking for is not part of the trans. at all. It's in your rear differential... The last picture you posted is correct.

An AWD car has two ring gears, and two pinion gears.

Ok, so if it's actually in my rear diff,

My understanding is that somehow the ring & pinion 'translates' between the ratio that the tranny/driveshaft is spinning towards the rear diff. The final drive of my tranny is 3.90 and the rear diff is 3.90(??? or 3.545) I thought. If it were a EDM setup, their ring & pinion is 1.1:1 where ours is 1.0:1. I guess either the goal is 3.90 or 3.545 to the rear diff.

Anyhow, I can't figure out why I can't use what's existing on my car since it's the same as anything I'll find on any old, beatup USDM Subaru.

At least now I know what it looks like. Thanks.

The final drive of your tranny is 3.90 because of the front differential that is integral to the unit.

Normal RWD transmissions do NOT have a final drive - because they don't contain a ring and pinion/differential.

The final drive ratio of the front ring and pinion is 3.90 (remember, integral to the transmission).

The final drive ratio of the rear ring and pinion is 3.54 because the input to the rear gear is already reduced by the center differential/reduction unit hung off of the back of the trans (reduction ration of 1.1:1).

In other words the front output shaft spins 1:1 while the rear output shaft after the center diff/reduction unit (and consequently driveshaft) spins at 1.1:1 so the rear gear CANNOT be 3.90:1 like the front because that would make the final drive ratio 4.30. The front and rear final drives MUST be equal.

Clear as mud, right?

If this makes sense, I understand very well, but I don't understand at all.

I believe I get the concept of it, it's just seeing and touching the ring and pinion is what I need to do to fully understand. And I won't be able to do that until I have researched enough to know which car I can cannibalize it off of. Legacy? Forester? RS?

I will buy the ring and pinion brand new, but I'd prefer not to. Of course if some smart folks tell me that the ring and pinion is something I probably wouldn't want to spare expense on, then I probably will buy it new from George.
