Could someone show me where the ring & pinion is? Sub-sonic? Is2scooby? Sean? Anyone?

Hey
You wanna help me rebuild a tranny I got a 93 VW Golf auto that might need a rebuild I am thinking of attemting it because auto trannys for that car are expensive. Might just convert it to a 5spd actually cheaper to do all that work.

scu, i was looking for the pinion, not the pinion ring and pinion which is from the front differential...but i realized that to get to the tranny you need to get to the front diff anyway.

Ah, this.
These 2 parts are supposedly the final things I need to buy in order to install the tranny (bought, not yet enroute). I think maybe I should surf on over to 'howstuffworks.com" and do a little bit more learning. I think I know what they look like in general, and I believe I understand how they work, I just can't seem to grasp the concept. The ring & pinion, I originally thought, were outside of the tranny, between either the front or the rear diff (or both) and were sort've the 'translator' between the 3.90 final drive, and the 3.545 diff.
I know my thinking is all screwed up, but I'm sure that it won't be after the tranny is installed.
Anyone know where I can get a good used one of these? Will the RS or WRX (my old one, of course) fit my new trans? How about an old legacy or forester?
