SUBARU DTC CEL Thread: Diagnosis & Resolution

Hey guys & Gals,

Using i-club.com as another resource for research, there wasnt that much on here as compared to NASIOC, rs25.com, iwsti.com, clubwrx.net, etc. etc. Ill see if I can get this a sticky..

Guys & Gals, you can add your Diagnosis & Resolution for each DTC CEL code you pulled. I know research helps us learn more about our subie's but for those who have their suby as their only source of trasnportaion, this could prove useful. Here we go and ill start first.

P1443: EVAP Emissions Vent Control Valve System Malfunction

My Diagnosis:

1. Plugged in the Green Test Connectors located under the dash which puts the engine in check mode and test's all relays, solenoids and Valves. (Listen for clicks and humming sounds to determine functionality of the mechanical device)

*All solenoids, and valves in my case where operable and receiving perfect voltage.

2. Hooked up the Vag Com cable with ECUexplorer running to get live feeds of relays, solenoids, and valves operating.

3. Took off the Charcoal Canister and emptied out alittle bit of loose charcoal pellets.

4. Blew 40 PSI of compressed air into the Fuel & Vent hoses to try unclog the clog(which didnt help).

5.Blew 90 PSI of compressed air into the drain hose and mud & road debris came shooting out like my car made diarrehea.

6. Drove the car for 10 miles and code didnt come back on.

P0442: EVAP Emission small leak detected or P0457 GAS CAP LOOSE.

My Diagnosis:

1. Checked the Gas cap and it was loose.

2. Retighten it and DTC CEL didnt come on after driving after 10 miles.

Cool. For the P1443, you mentioned you cleaned out the "drain hose" with compressed air. Just curious where this hose is or what it is connected to?

For the P0442, bah! you know better than to keep your gas cap loose! lol.

the drain hose is normally hooked up to the charcoal cannister...

from the purge valve/vent vale it opens up to the charcoal cannister then to atmosphere...most cars mount the charcoal cannister in the back by the tank...but i've seen them up front as well...

I know, but hopefully it helps. I hate always having to go to Nasioc to find it. I actually have a printed out version I keep in the car.
The best solution for all of those codes is to just disable your CEL light.

this may b e a dumb question, but here goes... how do you pull the codes, is it with the diagnostics tool? If so, and I don't have access to the tool, is there another way to pull the codes? Like with the old obd-0 hondas there was the led that blinked the code. Anything like that on the subarus? Please forgive me as this is the first time I have encountered a cel on an obd-2 vehicle.

2005+ Legacys have this feature to find out what the code is using oem white plugs. Its in the manual, but not for WRXs and STIs though from what I know so far...
