Sti + Shell Gas = No more pinging
Hey yall... just thought I'd share my most recent epiphany...
I've always used Chevron on my 02 WRX, I mean it's got Techron and those cute little cars right? I never had a problem with it and so when I got my STi I kept using Chevron(Techron & Cute Cars... Check!). I would get the pinging that everyone else was getting, pretty much anytime I'd WOT from 3000RPM in 3rd or 4th.
I figgured that I since I couldn't have my car down for a week or two while my local dealer sent the ECU in I'd just live with it until I got some aftermarket engine management. So I'd just try to refrain from putting the car in a position where it would ping to often, but if the situation ever arose where I felt it necessary to stomp it(hmmm, far to often in this car) then the resulting pings would make my teeth hurt.
I never really thought to try different kinds of gas, once I tried Texaco but still got the pinging. But a few days ago I had to get gas when I was headed up for a crater run with my friend and we stopped at a Shell to fill up. No pinging since then... still need to go thru another tank to verify... but I'm so happy... no more cringing when I accelerate hard.
So yah... looks like Shell for me!

I've been running 76 and shell with much success.
When Ed took my engine apart he said the pistons were clean and shiney. He said they looked brand new and wanted to know what gas I run.
Mostly I run 76 with a blend of the 100, but that was because I had no intercooler, small injectors or timing retard. Now I just run the 92.

Just buy a 5 gallon drum of Xylene. Mix 1 part to 3 parts of Either shell or 76 92octane. Oh, don't forget the 2oz of Marvel Mystery Oil for every gallon go Xylene and Presto!!! You have affordable 100 octane.
If you have an account at Sherwin Williams, it's $35.96 for 5 Gallons of straight up Xylene. If you have questions on mixtures to get lower octane to be more cost effective, just email me. I typically run 96-97 octane full time.

Barry, not too sure about the power cut prob you're having. I can tell you that you can certainly bump up the boost if you want, and it will get rid of pinging. Your throttle response will be crisper as well. Try it out. I ran a 97 octane mix today and my car ran well. Didn't beat you, but ran a respectable time.
