Not trying to sell the 6-speed, it just makes sense.

Well, I don't technically use the engine to brake but when slowing down with the clutch engaged there is clutch/gear noise from the ACT clutch/LWFW.
The symptoms are similar to service bullitens on the 02 WRX.
I did not have the noise w/ stock 04 clutch and RA gears.
Only got the noise after ACT clutch/LWFW.

I have LWFW and I don't think the benifit is worth the noise.
The close ratio gears are what really made the downshifting easier and I doubt the LWFW gives much extra power to the wheels.
However the front LSD is incredible for handling.
Stock center diff works just fine, so there is no huge need to change it.

I agree 6-speed would be nicer but they are not as cheap and obtainable as people claim they are, when you consider all the hidden costs.

Fact is, you can get amazing performance from an upgraded 5-speed (RA Close Ratio+LSD) but you can't abuse it with drag racing.
A smooth Autocross/ Track-Day driver will find the upgraded 5 speed to be plenty reliable.
With the RA close ratio gears I primariiy only use 3rd, 4th, 5th at the track.
The close ratios provide amazing flexibility.
It was one of my best bang for the buck mods.
It is expensive, but if you are not one of the luck few who scored on a 6-speed for < $4K installed it is a great option.

I'm

not dissin' the 5-speed. Mine (stock) works fine, but I really think a built block will need a stronger tranny. My 5-speed is fine, but I think the increased torque and horsepower will probably kill it later. I don't drag my car, as I don't feel the tranny is capable. I agree there are "hidden" costs with the 6-speed. I've considered both the RA gears and the 6-speed. Both have their advantages. I must be more "sensitive" than others, 'cause I definately feel the difference with a lightweight flywheel. To each his own.

Cool, it's all good.
I do hear what you are saying.
Believe me, I would have done a 6 speed if I could get one in my car for <4K total.

For me, the gear swap was driven by my hatred of the granny 1st gear, the large spacing from 1st to 2nd and a 5th that is too tall.
Typical of US spec gearing.
I had no concerns about strength.
I just wanted close ratios to avoid falling out of the powerband and for easier rev-matching on downshifts.
In my case, I got what I wanted from the RA gears.

I do wish I had done the Exedy clutch/LWFW, as you did (instead of ACT).
Are you getting misfire codes with yours?

I've

never had a misfire CEL but I run the 13 lb cromoly flywheel, not the superlight one. I need to drive a RA gearset to see what it's like.

Hey San, when mine is done I'll let you take a spin. I find myself very surprised that you don't either have them already or at least drove a wrx with them in

Well

I've really been on the fence as to the RA gears or just doing the 6-speed. Honestly I haven't had problems with the stock tranny, so nothing is rushing me towards either. I do think eventually I'll swap out my motor, so I'll think about a tranny at the same time. If all things were equal I'd do the RA gears. I think that the 6-speed is heavier (weight-wise), but haven't weighed both side-by-side. If you're into dragging, I think the 6-speed is the clear winner.
