Question Starter Grinding on cold / warm start

So this being the 3rd time it's happened, I'm starting to think it's not a fluke - about two months ago, after being parked overnight, my starter did a 'grind' when I went to start the car - as if it was already started (it wasn't). Almost a month to the day, it did it again, this time after being parked for 15 or so minutes after a decent drive. Finally today again, after having been driven, then parked for 30min/1hr...

I have no idea why this is happening and how much damage it can be causing. I can imagine the fly wheel and starter's gear mech have some wear on them, which can only cause problems down the line.

It's under warranty obviously, but I wanted to air this out in case anyone's having difficulties too (will be searching other forums on this).

(also, Shaggy? you there? curious if you have any thoughts/suggestions - i'll probably give you a call and bring the car down this weekend/next week)

*edit* it did this on 7/15, 8/14 and 9/8 of this year. (i keep some stupidly detailed records.)

i just asked the service guys. they said to give them a call. they said also you might have to leave it over night if it only happens at cold starts so i have no idea just call them up.

i've heard the karmaloop theory of christening the backseat... things never turn out well after that...

yeah i'll give em a ring - its odd that it only happens once a month, about a month apart... (and that i've certainly decided my car is a 'she'.)

wish i could - it's super random though, that's the problem; as soon as i hear the grind i release the key, then all is well...

well if your car is a "she" having a real girlfriend is cheating? :P

Mine grinds once in a long while, every several months.

If its under warranty WTF are you asking us? Just go on and call Servco and get the maintenance done.

Mine does that once in a while, alarming at first but it doesn't happen all the time. My STi is 8 years old BTW.

wow, its gotta be a subie thing, i've owned at least 15+ cars and 10+ bikes and never had a starter grind. well, i guess mystery solved (will probably drop by the dealer anyhow)

Mines has never done that. Unless I turn the key when the car is already running.
