Dave just moved here from Vegas - he should have a good idea of what that took...
Mitch just moved from the PNW back to Hawaii and back to the west coast (San Diego this time) so he should be pretty helpful...
Joey just graduated from UH so he'll be a wealth of knowledge...
We have all kinds in this rogue's gallery!

Shipping your car is $908. I just shipped mine last week.
Insurance is great at Atlas Insurance. VERY cheap. I went from $2600 a year to $908 by switching to them from AIG.
Renting right now in town is a bit of a pain. Prices have been going up and choices are fewer as of late.
If you live in town, everything around the island is roughly 30 minutes away
is2scooby is a post *****.

Yeah the wife and I just moved here from Vegas. Cost us about $5000 to move a lot of our cr@p and the SUV. We even left all the furniture at home so all I can say is that I would have shopped around a bit more for movers and left more stuff there.
I also hope you dont have animals. If you do, well you dont want to move here. Search on the web for Hawaii Quarantine and READ UP! Do the 90 days pre vet treatment stuff or the animals are stuck in prison for 4 months. Its a pain and its damn expensive. Another reason you dont want pets is NOWHERE rents to pet owners. Well thats almost true. It took us 2 months to find a place and we about just gave up and didnt tell people about our cats. We had to join this "PETS OK" mailing list where this gal would call all the rentals and find out if they take pets. Its the only way to go, but you might not have pets and the 2 minutes it took to read this paragraph you have completely wasted.
Onward. Jobs, find one before you get here. Unless you have mad bankroll its a *****. Maybe you are military, probably not since YOU are deciding to move here and with the military I believe THEY decide you should move here. So, find a job or get a thick money clip like Richard has. And that is the ONLY thing Richard has thats thick, dont believe what he tells you.
Lets see. What else. Its expensive here. We dont even have air con and elec bill is over $100 a month. I will cry once we get a house (oh yeah, houses, damn expensive too) and have air con. Rent is ridiculous here as well. We got lucky with a 2 bedroom/1bath with den/living room for $1350 a month. Every single place for rent gets about 50 calls on it and for the 2 months we tried they all (even the dumpy ones) had about 20 very qualified people applying for it. Not fun.
What else. Its damn beautiful here, sunny, warm, just enough rain to cool things off every now and then. Beaches rock, everything activity-wise rocks here. Its still a city tho, has the same problems as all the others, traffic, people getting their jimmys shot off with shotguns, people trying to shoot you with guns that jam, traffic up the wazoo, but everytime we are stuck in traffic we think atleast we are stuck in traffic in Hawaii. Its not paradise. I admit I thought it was a bit more than its turning out to be. I had visited here many times in the last couple years, but never had to deal with the reality of work and expenses here so I had this nice inflated idea of this place. Its turning out just like all the other places I lived, but you have the added benefit of the sun, water and HOT AZZ asian chicks. Damn... Saw some of the nicest dental floss bikinis today at Ala Moana park. Ugh...
Well ask away if you have questions, the rentals illustrated or whatever is ok, but you can also go to www.honoluluadvertiser.com and search rentals there I believe, as well as jobs and such.
Later, Dave

Just a little background about me... I dont have any pets, I'm bringing my car, that 900 sounds about right if i drove it to Los Angeles. I dont plan on bringing anything except clothes, and what I can UPS. Im used to about 800-1000/mo for rent, so wow, I thought i could get away with 1000 for a 2 bedroom. I'm Single. I have a job already, thank god. Home Depot transfers people all over the country with a phone call and a good reason. Wow.. is this screaming want ad or is it me? Anyway, thats about it for me. Oh and I dont plan on moving till the end of the year, so I should have a decent bankroll when I get there. I'll check that website for rentals too.
Thanks for the help guys, the more the better . Oh and I plan on enrolling an UH Manoa after I get settled.

Which Home Depot are you going to be working at? We have 2 on the island. Its probably best that you live closer to work. If its the pearl city Home Depot, there is a ghetto twin tower building thats pretty cheap. Last I recall, the stuidos were going for like 500 bucks a month. not sure for 2 bdrms.

I just moved here in January, and while I had been here a few times b4, it was not what I expected. I came with about $5000 extra money to buy furniture and stuff, that was gone in the first few weeks, I'm still parking my a$$ on a borrowed couch that is uncomfortable as hell. Jobs are also hard to come by, I've been through several since I've been here, about 5 months. Finally found one I think I like at a tv station, only problem is the pay is crap, but oh well. Also, dunno what nationality u are, but if ur white, racism is fairly prevalent here. I haven't quite gotten used to it yet, but its not that big of a deal, just annoying and frustrating sometimes.
Lots of people I talked to say that for the first few months they were here they didn't like it at all. I would agree, be prepared for the worst. Expect that its going to suck here for a while, before you get used to things. But once you get used to it, and once you realize that u don't need to have a phat bankrole to have fun, it is definately a good place to live. Just don't get fired from your job, and expect the worst but hope for the best.

Got your PM. I'll try to get in touch with my friend (he's usually drunk for the better part of every weekend so it may be Monday until he's intelligible ) and ask him re: the positionals available at his store and the COLA.

Haven't got a chance to talk to my friend yet. He's been partying all weekend and wouldn't be very coherent if I got him on the horn anyway.
BTW, have you looked into out of state tuition for UHM? Last I heard it was pretty astronomical for the level of education you receive!
