Rustproofing/undercoating needed in HI?

Hey guys, I was wondering, do cars on O'ahu need any sort of rustproofing or undercoating on the undercarriage? Have any HIIC'ers had this done, or have not done it and had rust problems? I might be shipping my vehicle from San Francisco in the near future and since it does not currently have any undercarriage rustproofing, I was wondering if I should get it done before I send my WRX over. Much mahalo's, guys!

i would say not really. rinse off the underside of your car every once in awhile and you should be pretty good. the salt does get on the top of the cars alot tho cause of the rain and sea spray, especially if you dont have a covered garage. make sure you touch up any chips/scratches cause those will rust fairly quickly.

Yeah no special work needed...just gotta wash more often and rinse the undercarriage.

Also, make sure to get a really good coat of wax on before you get it on the boat.

So you're moving then?

So I guess washing it once a month with a nice hose down under the car should be sufficient? Cool, thanks guys!

Blake: yeah, shooting for sometime in June. I'm pretty psyched. So make sure you come back and visit me, okay?! Oh yeah, and I was planning to ship w/ Horizon b/c they place the car in a container. But then again, I just waxed the suckah last week haha.

austinp02: d'oh, once a month is plenty here in San Francisco haha. To be honest, I probably wash once a quarter and wax twice a year Thanks for correcting my perspective on "frequent washing"

Brandon: Yep, making the big move! Big chance for me since my folks just retired and are fulfilling their lifelong dream of moving to Hawai'i, and they said that if I'm willing to do all the grunt work in preparation for the move, I could come along! I intend to work out there, but worst comes to worse, I could always go to school again hehe. So anyway, ya better come back sometime to pay a visit and relive old times!

Hey Ryan, that's some pretty cool news that you are planning to move here. They don't really push undercoating here, but what I've found that if your drive is a shoreline one like mine, the front of the car gets abused by the salt air. So its a good idea to hose down the radiator area every so often. Looking forward to seeing on this rock again.

Took you long enough to make the move! HAHAHA!

Cool, I wish you and your family the best in Hawaii. The Hawaii Subaru crew is cool, but this you already know. I'll hopefully be able to visit Hawaii soon. Did you graduate already?
