It's usually a good idea to do mods one at a time to ascertain the effectiveness of the mod. When you do several at once, you're left guessing as to which was positive or negative. There are exceptions.
I ran the stock turbo with my fmic at the track in Oahu. I had an intake, TBE, boost controller, header and fmic (no tune, but a wideband O2). I was as fast or faster than the STIs at the track (I was much lighter).
The ECU and AVC-R took a few days to adjust to the fmic, but when they did the pull from 5000 to redline was very strong, as opposed to before when the pull up top just wasn't very strong.
The craze of buying the biggest fmic that will fit is usually overkill for all but the largest turbos IMO.

FMIC isn't going to make your car any faster overall, it's just going to give you turbo lag to redline.

When you install an uppipe, downpipe, and full cat-back exhaust, you can still run your car without a tune, it will run ok but not really great. Having a tune that includes those parts will greatly help your car gain power, and not only that, help it run smoother too....
If you currently don't have a tuning device, I recommend buying an Cobb Accessport. It's worth every cent....
