as stated before mobil1 isn't all it's cracked up to be. I've learned this years ago when first getting my Suby... I used to use only mobil1 then learned the difference. He has/had a viscosity sheet that basically sums up it's results. Needless to say that wasn't good enough for my car and the way that I drive it so I quickly switched to amsoil and have never looked back

Funny, when I was at the ALMS races at Laguna Seca, they were putting Mobil1 into one of the race cars. My camera wasn't on to snap a picture of it though

Hmmm very interesting...thanks for sharing! I did have couple questions after reading the article...

1) Are they talking about 5W-30 regular or synthetic oil? I did not see that explicitly specified anywhere in the article. The test code names might clarify that question, but I have no clue what those abbreviations stand for.

2) I wonder how the other Mobil products stack up. I personally run 10W-30 synthetic in my car, so I would be very interested in those results as well...

i have been on a Castrol Syntec kick for the past few oil changes but that is mostly because they were on sale packaged with a K&N filter.

I usually run Quaker State Q but will give Valvoline a try someday.

Out of all the "boutique" type oils I can only find Motul and Royal Purple in my area...Amsoil and Redline are too much of a pain to get a hold of.

I am interested in knowing how you guys know which oil is better for your car than the other oils... Based on the article, it relies on scientific testing done.

I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic on all my past cars, never run into any problem, maybe I don't drive hard at all, but I am very interested in knowing which oil would be best for my new car since I will be switching to synthetic soon...

Thanks

Why don't you run 5w-30? Do you find yourself filling up your oil often?

all i have to say is ive tried mobile 1 valvoline and royal purple and in my experience royal purple give the best protection......... in my vws anyways ive notice the cylinder sleeves to be shiny even when running royal purple with barely any ware......... valvoline ive noticed streaking on the sleeves and with mobile 1 ive noticed build up around the top of the piston head and a little bit of streaking so imo royal purple is the only way to go...... but then again i havent taken apart my subaru to take a look at the pistons or sleeves so ill have an opinion on weather or not its worked that way with my car when i get to that point.......which will im sure be pretty soon.... royal purple ftw!!!

Redline is good stuff too, I didn't get any info on it. I've previously used it in my trans and diffs.

Nope, I do not have any oil issues, but I do have a TD06 20G in my car that gets good daily use. I wanted a little more viscous oil considering that my engine probably generates much more heat now (plus it was recommended by my shop as well). I am aware of what my manual says and the whole debate of brand and weight...

I am interested in finding out how much it costs to send your oil out for analysis. Something I might do to see how my engine is fairing, but it does not sound like a cheap procedure.

I was on Royal Purple for about 10k miles (5k interval) and I liked it. I decided to switch to Amsoil 5w-30 and like it even better. The car runs about 2 degrees cooler oil temp wise (according to Defi). It runs smoother, but then again the oil is new.

We'll see how it does later on in the interval. Right now I only have about 600 miles on the oil and one Solo event and it has not consumed any oil.

I use Mobil 1 5w-30 in my wife's IS 300 for over 50k and like it a lot. Her car has normal bolt-ons and the engine does not consume any oil over the 5k service interval. In fact, I just did a 60k service to her car and used a combo of Mobil1 engine oil, OEM ATF and Amsoil LSD fluid. Her car now runs sweet.
