Question about those patriotic plates...
I've seen some people with those patriotic plates on their cars. But instead of the sticker that they give you for it, people put their own sticker on it. I'd kinda prefer to put a different sticker on it but don't want to get in any trouble. Is it legal to put a different sticker on it or no sticker at all?

put it this way-
you are not gonna get tagged if you simply are not a
P R I C K to the cop if he pulled you over.
and as long as you don't have any "questionable" material(like a number one...middle finger style)

Double checked with my boss on this subject. Any sticker that was on the link is ok, as long as that sticker was registered to your license plate when you payed the extra fee and changed over. Other then that, no other stickers (surfing brand etc.) can replace the current one.

When it comes to special vanity plates the actual sticker has a code and it's printed on your registration papers. It IS illegal to switch the stickers because they can use that to further identify the vehicle.
However, I don't think anyone cares unless the cop's a real ***** and actually knows all the sticker codes OR maybe challenges you once he notices your registration papers don't match with the plate's theme
At least that's how it is for CA plates and i'm sure it's the same on the Big Island.
