question about legality of High Intensity Discharge

technically.. would putting an OEM STi HID kit into my WRX be legal?

i'm not sure if its

"if it's aftermarket HID's then it's illegal"

or

"if it's not originally on your car from the factory, it's illegal"

anybody wanna shed some light?

and anybody know what the cost of the OEM STi HID kit would be?

thanks!

-Pete

Its illegal to retrofit HID lights onto a car that did not have them from the factory. OEM HID is sort of a gray zone, especially when it was available on the same car. However, my understanding is that a car that came with halogen headlights has to have halogen headlights.

well petepete, i dought that you are gonna get pulled for having hids over your uber loud exhaust. but i would think that bc of the crap laws here, they would be illegal. is he cop really gonna know? probably not. are they really expencive, depends on if you buy them new or used. either way i say go for it and see, just make sure you get your recon. =P

Re: HID's

My thoughts are that as long as they are not angled to high on to the road, hpd's finest aren't gonna bother you. it'd be cheaper to go aftermarket hid than oem sti, unless you got a reall steal of a deal.

^^^Yep yep. More than likely the only problem you would face would be if you went to get a safety check and the dude really knew his stuff. I would think all you would have to say is they are Silverstars that just look HIDs if you are ever questioned. But like Chris says just make sure they aren't pointed in peoples eyes and you are all good.

But the legality is it is illegal to modify any OEM headlight, kinda like having no cats. I wouldn't worry too much about it just make sure they don't look too blue cause that might get you some unwanted attention.
