The Pyramid of Speed

Wow. Drag racers suck.

Level 3 of the Pyramid of Speed

1/4 Mile Drag Racers
Next up are the 1/4 mile drag racers. These guys are at least smart enough to take their cars to a formal race track where there are rules, safety regulations, and ambulances for when they crash because they can't figure out how to drive in a straight line. They look down upon the Freeway "Racers" and Street "Racers" as a bunch of immature folks who don't have enough sense to take their need for speed to their local 1/4 mile drag strip. Instead, these 1/4 mile geeks spend their life trying to break the 12 second barrier in their souped up street cars. Sometimes they might even get four runs in a day, and at 13 seconds a run, this means they spent the whole day at the track for 52 seconds of "racing" fun. Kinda like spending $200 on a dinner date, and having premature ejaculation at the dinner table.

Favorite type of woman: Any female that has teeth.

Favorite magazine: Hot Rod, Car Craft, Hemi World.

At least I've broken the "12 second barrier".

hmm funny i get about 8 plus runs in on any given night, but the knowledge and friendships i gain is well worth the long wait in lines. oh yeah and i'm still working on the 12 sec. barrier and thats fun in itself watching a car you built improve.

formula 1 the top sport? it's become a competition in technology! what about rally? no worries about passing as you have a hard enough time keeping it on the road.....

agreed about the first guy across being the winner but by the same coin you could call NASCAR real racing. I'm not trying to bash F1 - i watch and follow it as much as i can... but races like the US grand prix where schumacher starts 7 and finishes 1 and you also have drivers like button leading the race are becoming almost non existant - it's no longer ***** to the walls driving IMO....

Real racing? As far as I'm concerned, when me and my friend lined up with our Big Wheels (summa y'all might not remember that ), now that was real racing. Such an adrenaline rush.

Seriously, everyone has their own definition of what real racing is, but I think most of y'all would admit that a car 'enthusiast' isn't just gonna jump into a NASCAR driver's seat and be competitive, or even safe for that matter.

Also, I think that I'd agree with most of you that the Rally drivers or the F1 drivers would probably drive ovals around the oval track drivers of the world, but on the other hand, there is no real criteria which would point to which sport is the 'real' racing or who are the 'real' drivers.

Like I said, Burns (sp) and Shumaker (sp) are probably the best race car drivers in history, but what is it that makes them better than Foyt, Roger & Rick Mears, and the entire Unser family, or better than Tony Stewart (my personal favorite), Gordon, and Ryan Newman (all Hoosiers, I might add)? What about Don Garlits and Christian Rado? What about the Kinser family?

Every one of these sports the drivers have to virtually put their lives on the line everytime they get in the car. Everyone of them have dominated their particular sport. Everyone has to be masters of reflex and able to push the envelope past where most any of us would.

Give it some good hard thought and post up. I'd be interested in what some of everyone's thoughtful responses might be.

FWIW, my vote would probably go to WRC as having the best drivers. There are many facets of motorsports and racing that I am not even aware of, so my opinion is just that. While I say WRC, I also say that Tony Stewart is my favorite driver because I think that he's very versatile. He is one NASCAR driver who learned his chops in a type of racing you're all familiar with; drifting. He grew up on the dirt oval track in a 600hp sprint, midget and super-modified....going sideways mostly.

Screw you Pat,

I was already too big for a big wheel when they came out. They sure looked cool though.

IMO, NASCAR drivers really do have skill. Just because the sport revolves around driving left and only one track with a S curve doesn't mean the drivers suck. There was an event on Speed Channel where Nascar drivers like Jeff Gordon tried F1 and WRC rallying and they did very well. Even the WRC drivers were impressed with them.
