Purchasing a Subaru Need some help

Hey Guys,

I found an 02 WRX wagon that I'm looking to purchase very soon, but I want to get a second opinion on it from some subaru owners. This will be my first car I purchase, so I dont want anything to break on it anytime after I buy it. I dont know to much about subaru, so I was wondering what are common problems I might find when buying a used subaru in hawaii. I test drove it and it feel good, clutch was a little stiff from what I'm use to but I read that its normal. The car has all the maintenance records. I had my dad who's a mechanic look over the car and to his knowledge its seems good, but one thing he was kinda was worried about was the timing belt, cause the owners said that timing belt doesnt need to be change until like 105,000 miles, but others car dont you change timing belt at 60,000 miles.

Heres a little info on it,
2002 WRX Wagon
Silver
66,xxx miles
5sped
It has normal dings and dents from rocks and doors.
Asking price at the moment is 10.5k, what do you think of the price?
KBB price at fair is 11,980

timing belt isn't mandated to be changed until 109k per the maintenance schedule but depending on the previous owner will determine if it need to be changed sooner. Is the car modified in anyway?

it's good to check it at 60k

how old i the owner of the car?

He looks mid to late 20s.

Well definitely check out the car one more time, to check the timing belt. Is there any other problems or things that I should check?

well how does the car shift? can you get into reverse? has he ever abused the car (i.e. runumhard cruises or drag raced legally or illegally)

check to see if the valve covers (on the sides of the engine on the drivers side and passenger side) don't have oil collection in that area.

look at the tire wear.

do you have a picture of the car?

Well you're already 1 step ahead of the pack because you're looking at a wagon.......but then again, I may be a little partial to wagons .

The car shifts ok, reverse was easy to get into. Not really sure on if he abused the car but I dont think so cuz he said the car use to be his uncles and his uncle gave it to him when the uncle moved to the mainland not to long ago.

what if there is oil collected in the valve cover area? what does that mean? is it something easy to fix?

it's a PITA to change the valve cover gasket since it's on opposite sides of the engine.

instead of dwelling on the negative and being scared away from getting a car that you obviously want. why not take some pictures of the car under the hood and post them here.

Make sure you look underneath the car also for any types of leaks.

The price seems pretty good. Back in October, I sold my 02 Sedan with 27,000 miles for 12,000.

It looks like you have taken time to find you car ( 2 yrs). Good for you.
At around 66k miles on the odometer, you obviously want to ask for service records, or if done by the owner, what was done? The price sounds not too bad, depending on the condition of the body and motor, etc.
