Off topic: UHOC IT Positions open

I know that there are bunch of IT guys here. I just got an email this morning listing the 2 IT positions for the UH Outreach College. I just wanted to post this up for anyone who is looking for work.

IT (permanent) Listing 1

IT (Temporary) Listing 2

Thanks, B... Those are some pretty intimidating "qualifications" though! :gulp:

The qualifications I think are meant to intimidate, from what I understand the position does not use all of those skills. UH always list these qualifications, in hopes of finding the 'Uber' applicant.

That's how all the UH IT position postings are. I'd say the majority of them only utilize a little more than 50% of the requirements.....especially when you see what it pays. But you should remember....most state workers can get away with about 200 work days a year (yeah a friend figured it out our final semester).

They definitely do try to intimidate....but I can tell you from working there and applying for positions there that the vast majority of applicants are average at best.

$3178 a month = $38,136 a year.

Is that the maximum salary and is that typical for those types of positions?

Sadly it seems like this is what the salary range is for anything private or education sector. Im completely at a loss for words. I really should have researched salaries before moving here. I have people offering me $30k a year for what I did before and earned three times that living in cheap old Boise. Ugh. My only hope is that the secret clearance goes through soon, but people say it can be 2 months or 2 years. Great. We are drowning financially now, spending so much just to be here and not even a single prospect of work yet. Great.

It may be the pay but often times there is some room for adjustment. Usually they don't even post the monetary amount, only the scale level so most people really don't know how little they'll make

Tim

Its sad to say but thats about the norm for many UH positions. You must remember that a lot of the time they exagerate the amount of responsibility....and its a state job!!! Crappy pay...lots of time off...usually a lot less stress and hours than the private sector. But I thought you had a good job

Dave

I'm sure you should be able to do much better than $30k...have you considered any staffing agencies? I know some have an inside track to some of the military stuff...you just need to watch out because some of them really try to take advantage of people. I was checking around a lot about a 1 1/2yr ago...and I still get calls every so often about job openings. Waiting to hear about a couple bids.

Yea, I have a good job with the DOD. We also get a 25% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

Just curious. It kinda limits my career options in the future though as I have to work for the Federal government or take a major pay cut (i.e. can't just move to another island and expect to make the same amount of money).

Overall for the pay at UH, the isn't the greatest for any kind of IT position.

You have to pay for a parking pass (cheaper than downtown though).

The one thing I can say that is good, is the 'scenery'.
