O/T:Rooted Andriod Phones

Looking for people that have rooted their phones to see what ROMs they are running and their opinion on the ROMs they have sampled with different kernels.

If Android 2.2 sucks ***** I'm gonna root, but if it rocks like it supposed to I would say not worth it.

Should be out for the droid next week I read.

If I were you I would root the phone now. Once you have the ota your going to have to wait until someone finds a way to crack it. I rooted my phone before the update then right after the update came out guys like toast and a few other devs were pushing out rooted 2.2 roms. I'm not sure about your phone but as far as the evo the regular 2.2 isn't worth it when you can get a rooted Rom that's 100times better. Plus all the evo guys that did the froyo update and thought they were gonna root right after are SOL and now are waiting for a new root method...like my wifes evo lol now she wants to trade me for my phone since she did the ota

So far I have only messed with toast roms and they are great b.c they still keep the HTC sense. I've read good things about those guys too.

using cyanogenmod 6.0 RC2 on my mytouch. Just don't use fix_permissions because everytime I do it kills my install. I just reinstalled the firmware again tonight because my apps were forceclosing after fix_permissions. 2.2 is a lot faster than 2.1.

The stock 2.2 was a big disappointment for me.

I have a relatively new Droid Incredible... not rooted.

What are the pros & cons to rooting? I'm not sure I really want to mess with the phone anyway... unless it will make huge difference. My only issue right now is the battery life, which I hear I can address with app killers.

Froyo supposedly coming soon for the DI... that's what the chatter on the forums are anyway. If I have any intention of rooting I need to do it before then?

App killer usually causes more harm than good and if you have a issue with you phone it can be hard to diagnose with a app killer installed. Your battery can improve dramatically with a good rom and there are plenty out there.

The only draw back I see from rooting your phone is if theres a issue with it you have to unroot before taking back to the store and whenever there are ota updates like froyo it won't download. But in my opinion that's a good feature because once you do a ota you loose your root for a update that will be cracked in a few days with better features.

Example: my wife downloaded the new froyo ota. I tried to root the phone b.c the update sucks compared to any rom. Now she is SOL because with every new update from Google there has to be a new root for it. But I was lucky enough to root my phone when I still had the 2.1. Once froyo was available for download the very next day devs were posting 2.2 rooted roms.

As far as pros here are a few
Phone processes data faster.
Improved battery life.
Removed bloated programs pre installed by service providers.
New programs or programs that other phones have that you might want.
Overall customization of your phone.

ROOT access is great because you can use apps that aren't allowed normally. You can use the terminal emulator to fix your phone on the fly via terminal and you need root access to go to some folders. You can pull apps and install on other phones. The thing that I use most is wifi tether. I turn my phone into a WiFi access point so I can use t-mo's HSPA+ network on my netbook.
