New Video Card. Yipee

My video card has been locking up the computer, turning the screen on and off and doing all kinds of wierd stuff.
SO I decided to upgrade.....

wow..

10. something GB/Sec bandwidth.

Just played UT 2003 with all the details on highest and it was pretty freaking awesome.

I got the PNY Verto G-Force FX 5200 ULTRA AGP 128MBDDR 650MHz GinsuMatic with Aloe.

150 bucks at Office Depot with a 50 buck mail in rebate.

damn you dom
you should have come over and talked to me, scoobywgn, or across the street to wrx-zero about it

150 was too much for a card
i HAD a gf4 ti4200 laying around trying to sell for 100...

you know that the 5200 ultra is about the same "speed" and "performance" as gf3 ti200 right?

I don't know crap anymore. This technology moves so fast.

I thought about you, but I don't have your number anymore.

I do know that after I send off this envelope tomorrow that it'll only have cost me 100 bucks anyway.

The best price/performer right now IMHO is the Geforce 5900 NU (non-ultra). Just ordered myself one for $180 from www.newegg.com.

I know it's "trendy" to be on the ATI bandwagon nowadays but I've NEVER had luck wtih them in the past and their customer service sucks so I won't be buying their stuff anytime in the near future.

I may have to reconsider once Half Life 2 out though (if the Nvidia cards fall as far behind as they say they will).

We'll see...

P.S. A friend bought a Geforce 5200 to replace his ailing ATI Radeon 7500 and it was loads quicker playing most games. I can't say it was any faster than my 2-3 year old Geforce 4 Ti4200 that I got for <$100 on ebay though.

And if neither of them are there I work across the street at PTC.

Having good luck with my Radeon 9800, but as you said I was leary about ATI, hate their drivers forever. Works nice so far tho. Crossing fingers...

Even had some bad experiences with the 5950 card, and when benchmarking I was very disappointed almost every time.

Like Boom said though, let one of us know before hand and we try to get the hook up.
Yeah I would have NEVER gone with ATI had it not come with the computer I bought. I usually assemble my PC myself so I can choose all the parts, but was lazy this time. So far so good tho. Still not completely happy with the card, but it works good enough for my gaming needs at this time. Another 6 months it will be time to upgrade to the latest trendy card.

I have a 9800 Pro. It is great except for when I play Call of Duty. It constantly locks up on the newest drivers. It crashes to the desktop with an error. If I use the older drivers, I only get like 5 fps. Still waiting for ATI to release new drivers.

BTW: used to have a GF4 TI4400. That card sucked. Completely worthless. No comparison to the 9800

Can you please explain to me how I get higher than 9800PRO points in 3dmark2001/2003 with my GF4 Ti4200 by a 18% point margin? Funny how you go ahead and say your card is crap and then bash the best card out there for the price. Looks like you didn't know what you were doin.

BTW, this was benchmarked with an retail Athlon 64 FX-51 at 2.2ghz on the Asus AK8N nForce3 platform, 2x antialiasing, no quincuinx, anistropic filtering. Ever heard of the new nVidia drivers yet?

There were differences between the 4200 and 4400 that allowed the 4200 to out perform the 4400, so apparently you don't know what you're doing.

ok, this is all well and fine,
but my problem still exists.

Does anyone know what causes the screen to lock up, turn of the monitor, turn it back on, then act normal until it does it again?

what what are the differences oh mighty video card guru?

gf4 ti4400 series had anywhere between 523-700mhz(350mhz cpu clock spd) ramclock
the gf4 ti4200 had 512-700mhz ramclock(260-350mhz cpu clock)
the ti4400 had a higher memory bandwidth than the ti4200. the only thing the ti4200 had as an option thats better than the ti4400 is the 8x AGP found in the newer Ti4200's. That does nothing in today's benchmarks and games.
