Need some help

I posted this thread on the EJ20T powerplant section, but maybe you guys can help me. I just installed my perrin up and downpipes, but I keep blowing fuse SBF#5 (blew 4 already). I think it has something to do with the resistor for the uppipe. I have a cel fix for the downpipe so i don't think it's that. Don't really know if I installed the resistor correctly. I just put one end of the resistor into a hole in the EGT plug and the other end into the other hole. Could it be the EGT sensor? The way I installed it? The resistor? Loose wires? Anyone experience the same problems? I have know idea what's going on or what i should do. Please help me out guys.

sounds like your shorting it out. try removing the resistor and see if the fuse holds. if it does then maybe a bad resistor? if you never touched anything else electrical then i would start there. did you install the cel fix at the same time? if so perhaps it is wired incorrectly. but if thats all you did then it's one of those two things, unless it's pure coincidence, in which case ignore everything i just said. like jon said, find out what the fuse goes to.

i dunno about a resistor shorting anything out in an electrical system but I do know that you can test the resistor to see if it's good or not. If you use a DMM (digital multi meter) and test the resistance of the resistor you'll be able to determine if the resistor is bad or not.

First you'll need to determine what type of resistor you're using... Is it a 2.2k Ω resistor then I beleive the bands on the resistor will be Red/Red/Red/Gold.

If this is for a WRX make sure that you put the resistor on the harness side and it should be a 2.2k Ω resistor. Unless the resistor is touching something that is the only way I can see it shorting or causing a fuse to pop. Make sure you trim down the leads of the resistor so that the resistor makes contact with the connector housing. You need to make sure that the leads are long enough to reach the contact area though.

Regarding the CEL fix. If you put that on INCORRECTLY I can see it being the possible problem with your blown fuses and NOT the resistor you put on your EGT probe to get rid of the CEL from the up pipe.

If you have a AccessPort then you will NOT need either since the AccessPort is programmed with larger tolerances for both up pipe and down pipe sensor values thus creating an electrical CEL fix.

I would first determine which fuse is blowing first. Look at your previous electrical modificatino to your car to determine if you've done anything half assed. Correct it then address your problem with your CEL fix and resistor

Jon

SBF#5?

where is this fuse located? engine bay or the front left console area? are you sure you're replacing it with the proper fuse?

SBF5 (according to the wiring schematics) is for the main relay block including the fuel pump and ECU. No idea what you did to the car mod wise but you should get that checked out. Sound too important to keep shorting out. I think this is in the fuse box in the engine bay, maybe one of the wires is pinched/shorting? Did you do anything in the vicinity of the fuse box?

Are you throwing a CEL? This would make troubleshooting a lot easier if you were.

i just changed out my stock up/downpipes to perrin up/downpipes. i'm assuming it has something to do with the o2 sensors because that was the only thing electrical i touched. the funny thing is that it was working for about 30 minutes. i even took it for a test drive and it felt awesome. no cels what so ever. i've also heard that if SBF#5 is blowing i could be the o2 sensor. hopefully it's that. i will try to fix my car tomorrow i'll keep you guys updated. thanks again for everyones help

ok with that being said make sure that you installed the CEL fix correctly.

I agree that an incorrectly installed or defective O2 CEL fix is the more likely culprit.
