I am looking at buying a digital video camera and I want one that is easy to use, easy to download video to my computer, image stabilization, etc..etc. I am partial to Sony so and all input is welcome..And cost has to be under $700.00

Sony Mini DVD...DCR-DVD201

Easy to use, quality product. I bought mine in June of 2004...took it to a National Karate tournament in NC and Alaska this summer - it worked flawlessly...Compact, light, battery lasts a good while.

Takes decent stills (I use a Nikon 8700 for that though) but it works fine if you only want to tote around 1 camera...

Some minor drawbacks...

cost of DVD-r media is expensive if bought in town locally...I purchased mine from Ebay (100/w hard plastic cases) for under a $1 a piece...(.85). Also purchased two double sided DVD-RW disks...for casual use.

Short video time (each disk records 1/2 hour). Seems like I am popping in a new DVD all the time.

If you want to edit videos, since it records in DVD format, you will have to rip the DVD down into multiple Mpeg's, re-assemble the video, and output it back to whatever format you want (I always make either VCD's or DVD's)...it's a laborous, time-consuming job...but well worth it. The Sony comes with it's own software that works ok...

Street Price should be 700ish...I bought mine in June for $680...should be less now with the DVD301 out...(it has a bigger LCD viewer)

I think I am gonna go with mini dv. I looked at the Sony that records staight to the DVD now will that DVD play in most players? And if I go witht the mini dv I heard it is best to download the video through the port on my computer labled 1394 for better quality is that true? I thought about it last night and I ma going for sure with a Sony camera just not sure which one. thanks guy for your input.

No problem...

It will play in most new players (one that can read DVD-R)...

You know...I'm not sure the DVD201 has a Firewire (IEEE 1394) output...I thought it had a USB 2 output (fast but not as fast as firewire)...I haven't tried it out to see how long it would take to downoad the movie...

Main difference between the DVD101 and DVD201 is the still pic resolution...the 201 is 1152x864 while the 101 is 640x480...

i have a sony minidv (i forgot which model) and love it. its smaller than the dvd ones and the tapes are cheaper than the dvd's. i usually upload my vids to my computer, edit, then burn them onto VCD or DVD formats. i think i paid about $575 for the video camera and accessory pack (case, extra battery).

Well I ended up picking up a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC30 it seems pretty cool. The test will be on the quality of video it puts out.

lol myron. those are digital cmaeras, not camcorders. and $350!?!? damn i got my gf's brother one for $175.

as for the camcorders, the DVD camcorders are nice and all, but are still way too expencive. the only good thing is that you don't have to transfer to pc and burn yourself, but finalizing the disk takes a while 2. i say go with a mini DV. if i were you i would stay away from the sony ones though. for one they are more expencive. two they use a touch screen lcd to do the playback which it's never good to be just touching all over the lcd. three the other camcorders are as good if not better. i personally would go with the canon or panasoinc for quality, or the samsung for price. hope this helps. i'll post up tonight with what we have, L8R
