Laser Detectors/Diffusers - Anyone a believer?

Aloha All,

Does anybody have any luck/experience/edvidence that the various laser detectors and diffusers for sale out there actually protect us against speed traps?

I'm in no way shape or form a chronic speeder - in fact I'm kind of an old fuddy duddy on the road but it's difficult not to get into some sort of high speed hijinks every once in a while with the S4 4.2V8 under the bonnet.

I'm wondering what I can do to protect myself from a pesky ticket. My insurance agency certainly doesn't need ANY more reasons to raise my premiums. lol

Any thoughts? Believers? Anybody on the law enforcement side of things care to comment?

Mahalo!

I've heard of one of them, lidatek, and saw it featured in a picture with two HPD officers holding up lidatek shirts.. the irony.

Not sure if it works though.

speaking of true stories... i had a laser "detector" for a few years... my friend who has been a cop for about 15 years now... used to always give me a hard time about how my "detector" was just a "beeper" that told me when i was going to get pulled over

so when i told him about my k-40... he laughed and didn't believe that it could diffuse
his gun... after 3 tests he believed me... ironically i never used the k-40 to it's full advantage.... a $5,000 premium will do that to a man-

*as a disclaimer... i don't think they are a good tool to speed... if you have a heavy foot...its just a matter of time before you get so careless that you will just end up getting paced from behind...and not even see it coming-

I've been scouring the net and it seems the Blinder X-treme M-20 is the unit of choice right now.

Anyone know of good installers that won't butcher an interior and understand when a customer is an OCD kook like me?

as far as the debate about whether or not detectors are worth the money or not...

if youre going 10 over and theres a cop around the corner, your detector will go off (as mine has with a cop around a corner) and it will give you time to slow down to 5 over or the speed limit.

However, if youre being an idiot going 20 or 30 over....its just gonna tell you when youre getting pulled over.

I dont have a laser diffuser though, I just have a radar/laser detector, which has only ever detected radar (guess I'm not in laser territory ever)

I had good luck with the K40 when we had the van-cams out. A friend used Lidatek on his S4 and had good luck with it also.

Thanks, Guys! I'm leaning towards a Blinder X-treme or Lidatek - profesionally installed at this point.

Call me crazy, but aren't lasers straight line?

At the typical distances they're shooting cars the beam is going to cover most (if not all) of the front of the car. If you're behind the guy getting tagged and you have a laser detector, there's probably a slight chance you'll pick up some scatter or the edge of the beam.

I haven't seen an HPD guy with a radar gun in quite a while.

It's not that hard to know where they're going to be. Just pay attention when you're driving. Short line of sight? Good place. Under a bridge so they don't get hot when the sun is out? Yup. Over the crest of a hill where they can just wait for you to pop up? Yup. It's not rocket science.

Like it has been said many times before - there's a time and a place to drive quickly.

...I just wish HPD would put as much effort into the rest of their job as they do writing tickets. I guess it takes on a whole new meaning when it's not revenue generating, eh?

Just got a sight unseen e-mail quote from Security & Sound on Beretania for a Lidatek LE-30 professional stealth install for $475. Sound like a decent deal to keep my S4's interior looking factory?

Is that just for the install, or does that also include the LE-30?
If it includes it, it sounds like a good price.
I have the blinder on my wife's car and the install really wasn't all that hard...
