Torque converter application and installation

Do not perform this modification without first performing the transmission cooler installation documented in "DIY Mods" on this site.

Have a qualified transmission EXPERT do this. One wrong bolt, or torque can take this investment and utterly destroy it!

It was 10.5 hours of labor when done by Subaru, but since it is a Subaru part, installed by Subaru the labor (and only the labor) is covered for 12 months/12k miles. What does that mean? If the converter shatters and you launch the trans it's your fault! If you launch like a moron all day long at 3600 RPM and strip your differentials it's your fault. If the dealer assembles something wrong and you leak oil and seize your trans... it's their fault. But what that means is that they will replace the parts with OEM parts. They are not going to source you a new converter and send it out again to be worked. Talk with your dealer manager PRIOR to doing this, and ask for their WRITTEN service warranty and make sure it falls in line with what I've said.

The Converter can be modified by contacting Joe Rivera Jr. at ProTorque. Tell him Jorge sent you over there and that you want the street/strip spec for a 2002 Subaru WRX, like they did for me. Current cost of the service is $495.

I purchased my new converter from Craig my parts manager at Subaru of Schaumburg, tell him I sent you there and you can get the parts at 10% above cost. Illinois residents need to pay sales tax, which came out to $426 total. Out of states are exempt, obviously. You pay the same amount from going through SubaruParts.com, but you get the parts MUCH faster from Craig.

Talk to your dealership, most dealers offer discounts of 10% or more on labor to I-Club members. With my discount I paid $780 for installation. Which is worth every penny! The quality and professionalism was worth the extra money. For what it's worth... I talked to over 2 dozen transmission shops in the Chicago land area, and all of them were from the $350 to $600 range anyways... Besides... all of them looked like dumps (frankly) compared to my car's original home.

I have also changed out all differential and transmission oils in favor of AMSOIL high performance ATF, and AMSOIL series 2000 racing gear lube. Incredible differences and improved shifting and MUCH lower temperatures. Plus the service life is 5:1 from conventional oils. Contact me if your interested... I can get this stuff for next to nothing.

Investment:
$399 in modifications
$426.05 in OEM parts
$780 in labor
$60 in miscellaneous shipping charges
$100 in high performance oils
$1765.05

Cutting absolutely NO CORNERS. I do laugh at those who will pay the $399, then the $426 to either cheap out on the labor (taking a big chance) or use conventional oil and save $80, when the synthetic racing stuff is such CHEAP protection.

What does it do when you connect to the site? It's written by Jorge himself.

Check this from nasioc BTW:

1. kevin thomas - 13.032
2. padrewrx - 13.250
3. wagonrx - 13.430
4. riftswrx - 13.605

i think rifts ran a 13.0s but i haven't gotten any details on it (i'll ask him one of these days) also, no info from RobPA, who i guess posts on clubwrx now.
I think Jorge did run 13.0's... But check it - none of those guys were able to post 103mph trap speeds (they were all 100-102mph). They all had upgraded turbos and torque converters though thus the great e.t.'s.

Once you get that converter in there you will be right with them!!!

I broke the 103 MPH trap speed

<-------------Check out the new times.

I'd also run some sythetic ATF. I also add a ATF temp guage to monitor what happening as well.

I'm using Mobil One Sythetic ATF. I think I'll use Redline next time I flush it. I haven't replaced my diff fluids yet.

Nice ET. Keep up the work and you'll be right with the fastest 4EAT. Try to put on the stock wheels and tires if you haven't already. You'll see your times drop a tenth or two.
