I'm outta here!

Well, tomorrow at 2pm I fly off the island to LA, where I'll pick up the Subaru and begin the trek across country. Eventually I'll end up in CT, where I'll spend the holidays, before heading down to the Washington, DC area for my next duty station in early/mid January. The Legacy actually left about 10 days ago, and as far as I know my container didn't fall off the ship on the way over , so it should be good to go for me to pick up on Tuesday.

It's been fun auto-xing, Super Lapping, and occasionally drag racing with my fellow Subie owners. Good luck to everyone out here, and if you're ever heading to the DC area (well, in the next 2 years or so) feel free to drop me a line.

2000mi down, 1500 to go. I'm in some unknown town east of Memphis, TN, pimpin' it at the Days Inn. Did the Grand Canyon on Wednesday, visiting my uncle in TX yesterday. Weather's been good (but cool to cold), although I think in the next couple days (as I head into the Northeast) there's a good chance I'll catch some wet/icy/crappy stuff. We'll see. Traffic's been very light for the most part. After 3 years of HI driving, it's amazingly refreshing to drive through an entire tank of gas with the cruise control locked on 82-85mph the entire time, passing one car/truck every 5min or so. Oh, and when you come up behind slower traffic, they get over to the right!!! WOW!!

Here's a shot from Rte 89, heading south from the Grand Canyon Wednesday afternoon about 30min before sunset:

Definitely having fun. Today I did the Cherohala Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon in southeastern TN / western NC. You can see maps of each here - http://www.tailofthedragon.com/maps.html . The Cherohala was more relaxed, not as much work, just miles and miles of sweeper after sweeper after sweeper. Bigger elevation change, too. Above about 4200ft there was quite a bit of snow on the sides of the roads, the road itself was clear, though. The Tail of the Dragon is frickin' insane!!! It's like no road I've ever seen before, a lot of work because the turns are one right after the other, and often are 2nd gear (maybe even 1st in WRXs with their different gearing). I'd have to throw some track duty pads on the car to really be able to push it for the full distance - after just a few miles I was starting to get some significant fade.

I left my camera out in the car, so I'll have to upload some pics another day. If you ever have the chance to drive in the mid Atlantic region, make a concerted effort to get to these highways, it's worth the trip.
