iHike (Island Hike) HIIC Hike Club Part 8 on 3/26/11
Ok, drop your wrenches and leave your awesome cars for a day! I am setting an HIIC exclusive hike since we do have a handful of hikers here. As some of you may recall, I’ve organized some of these hikes before and the last HIIC hike being in 2007. Due to my hectic schedule, I haven’t been able to set up one ever since. Well, I hope you guys stayed in shape because it’s back...lol.
One thing that I learned from organizing the previous hikes is that it’s hard to mix up novice, intermediate and advanced to expert hikers. So, having said this, I will be grading these hikes so you know if this is a hike that you want to go to. We did some novice to intermediate hikes before so I figured I will restart it with something fun. So here are the details:
Where: Stairway to Heaven (Haiku Stairs) via Middle Ridge
When: 3/26/11 @ 0800 meet at trailhead at the end of Moanalua Valley. There is a small parking lot at the end where you can park your car or get dropped off.
How long is the hike? 5-6 hours (appx)
Hike Grade: Advanced
What to expect: If you are completely terrified of heights, this hike is not for you. If you respect heights, then you will be fine. Depending on the weather, expect a lot of moisture and mud even on a clear day. I don’t think we will be sinking our shoes in deep mud but you will get dirty somehow. There will be a lot of climbing and sliding. We will not be doing any cliff hanger stuff, but there are areas where you are using ropes to pull yourself up and some areas, there are none. We will stay on established trails but there are places where it could get very tricky. I will be announcing more details later on.
DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HIKE FOR BEGINNERS REGARDLESS OF YOUR PHYSICAL CONDITIONING. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY WHEN JOINING THIS HIKE.
What to bring: A comfortable hiking shoe is a must! Bring 2-3 liters of water. A 2 liter camelback or a small backpack to put your water and food in is recommended. Comfortable clothing and a $1 rain poncho from Walmart is always good. Power bars, trail mix/nuts, banana or other fresh fruits, boiled eggs are just some examples of food that you can bring but nothing heavy. Bring enough food for yourself.
You have a month to prepare, so that takes out all of the excuses.
I will give more details later on.

cool. running is a very good conditioning for a hike. i normally do quick 2 mile runs 3x a week. it keeps me in check.
if u change ur mind, we'll be in Alewa heights tomorrow again. or if anyone is interested, we'll be meeting at the top by the water tank @0700. it will be a long hike though.

I'm in. unfortunately because this is likely to be on the weekends my kids comes first and i highly doubt these are safe for kids. If you can put together one that's safe for them that'd be great.
