it's just hard to beat what you get out of a 240 when you're talking about cost (as in very little). rwd, handles great, fun to drive, easy to mod, TONS of parts, etc, etc, ... the list goes on and on.
If you shop around, you can find a 240 pretty damn cheap, then use the rest of the money to mod the hell out of it and make it "your own" car. (if you know what I mean )
I got my '97 S14 from San Fran, ... I found it on autotrader.com and had a friend hand the money over and drop it off at Matson. People here would've been trying to sell the same car for $9-10k easy, but I got it for 8400 shipped. There are many, many dealerships that will ship it for you also, even some shops who will sell a "package deal" of the car and your choice of motor swaps anywhere from about $8k up to about $13k depending on the car, etc. You can get some deals on ebaymotors.com too.
anyhow, just a thought
