i think what he means is that a true wagon is built of the same frame(chassis) as the sedan, where as the hatch is a complete one off. you can see that the sedan is much longer than the hatch and so the frame and suspension are different. also the hatchbacks have a diagonal slant to the rear glass where a wagon tends to be more vertical. either way you look at it the sti is not a wagon, sry.

The 2008 US Impreza STI has the model code GR, reflecting the different 'wide body 5-door' chassis as compared to the GH '5-door' chassis used for the US 2008 Impreza WRX. The new 'wide body 5-door' chassis is 70.7 in (1796 mm) wide compared to 68.5 in (1740 mm) for the regular WRX '5-door' chassis.
taken from wiki and yes, the 5-door(hatch) subarus do use a different chassis than the 4-door and wagons do.
