HIIC Hike Club - Part 4 - Maunawili Falls Trail

Well, we were gonna do the Hawaii Loa Ridge, but due to popular opinion on the last hike, we need to do some more practice runs. So why not do something real fun! Here's what to expect:

When: Saturday, July 12, 2008***RE-SCHEDULED****
Time: 0800, meet up at Longs Drugs @ Pali Hwy.

An all-time favorite, this very popular stream trail is easy to follow, not too strenuous to negotiate, and features one of the best deep-water pool and waterfall combination on the island. Be warned, however, it can become very crowded on holidays and weekends!

One-way: 2.2 mi Gain: 1000-ft
Difficulty: Novice Danger: Medium
Starts in: Maunawili Subdivision

http://www.backyardoahu.com/index.html?mnwf1.shtml

Dangers/Other Considerations:
The stream crossings which normally exhibit a shallow personality - knee-high depth at "worst" - can rapidly become dangerous without warning. Torrential stream conditions are most likely to occur after rainfall so always be on the lookout for signs of potential flash-flooding, such as heavy or constant rainfall or rising stream level/flow.

Be careful: this trail is highly susceptible to wet conditions and is often slippery and extremely muddy.

As with all hiking, exercise caution and prudent judgement.

i voted for the 13th (sunday)....but I am very flexible. with that being said I would like to do this before I leave for training on the 22nd.

also the above mentions deep water pool? can you swim in it? or is it another high bacteria count body of water like most fresh water in Hawaii?

sorry if i forgot: bring your swiming trunks, towel and extra clothes and slippers with you. remember, this is a very popular hiking mecca for the, uhm, tourists...here's some pics to motivate Dom and Walter:

you can swim in the pool but i don't recommend any jumping on the rocks as there have been some bad accidents recently. and yes, the water is crystal clear...

to everyone who wants to join us, you are very much welcome to join. we are not a elite club of professional hikers (although we like to think we are ). we just go out, have fun and enjoy nature. we wait for each other, and then have a good ramen or pho for lunch. if you are interested, please post up...

link fixed...thanks Andy...

my usual reminders:

Some things to consider when hiking:
-Wear appropriate clothing...unless you want to have a Mudbutt . Shorts or jogging pants and bring an extra shirt just in case. Weather is very unpredictable in the mountains.
-Hiking shoes is recommended...well let me rephrase this...Hiking shoes is a must . It can get muddy and slippery in some areas.
-Bring enough water for everyone and hydrate as needed. You can get dehydrated pretty quickly without you knowing it.
-Bring some quick energy bars or light snacks. We will be resting as needed.
-Please respect the natural environment. Take all of your rubbish with you. Be courteous to other hikers and other park users. Follow all park rules.

You've been informed and warned...
