HIIC Hike Club

Ok HIIC'ers, here's the first of a series of graduated hikes that we will be going through in the next couple of months.

Keaiwa Heiau (Aiea) Loop
When: Saturday, May 10, 2008
Time: 0800
Meeting place: Aiea Starbucks
We will rollout to the trailhead at 0810. Please be there early.

A simple, 4.5-mile stroll through shady forests of guava, albizia, koa, and pine. A popular trail for mountain-bikers and family hikers of all skill levels, expect heavy traffic on weekends. Few views are offered because of its dense forest surroundings, but expect great birding opportunities!

Here's the link for more info:

http://www.backyardoahu.com/index.html?trails2.shtml

Some things to consider when hiking:
-Wear appropriate clothing. Shorts or jogging pants and bring an extra shirt just in case. Weather is very unpredictable in the mountains.
-Hiking shoes is recommended. It can get muddy and slippery in some areas.
-Bring enough water for everyone and hydrate as needed. You can get dehydrated pretty quickly without you knowing it.
-Bring some quick energy bars or light snacks. We will have 2 stops in this hike.
-Please respect the natural environment. Take all of your rubbish with you. Be courteous to other hikers and other park users. Follow all park rules.

There is ample parking at the park, but if we can carpool, then that's much better. See you guys there!!!

Please indicate your interest and include how many people are in your party.

Hikers:
WALTER
Ted and family
Joey
Brad
AndyR
AndyG808
Dom
Jimi
Erica
Mike
Jess, wifey, & cousin

I'm interested, haven't done any hiking in a while, and none on-island.

plan a hike to Konahuanui(tallest peak of Ko'olaus) and see who's down. lol. That hike is nuts if you start from Nuuanu side. Took us 8hrs. It's nuts when you get up there either way; hiking along the ridge with the steep 4,000 foot drop straight down on one side. Told myself I'd never do it again cuz I was so miserable towards the end, but now I really wana do it again. Anybody else ever do that hike?

When I am done with classes I will try to join you guys.
I am not in the best shape anymore...Ok i am in bad shape.... but I have a lot of hiking experience (App. trail from MD to NY, backcountry in the badlands & backcountry in CO).
I was also a member if the hawaii sierra club for a whole year (lol) so I have done a chunk of the major trails here on Oahu. Hopefully that counts for something.

Wow how long was the App trail from Maryland to New York? weeks, considering it takes about 3-4 hours to drive?
