What's the deal with the 1/4 performance only view I see as the majority thought around here? Is that all a lot of you guys care about? Honestly, im asking because id really want to understand the thought proccess some, if not most of you have?

For example the Neon, I hear some say "yeah its FWD, it sucks, but it does 12sec. 1/4mile times." Is that what most of you think? The Neon is capable of only straight line performance? I know of one Black Neon at the SCCA track that hands out *** in terms of handling. From the times posted, most of you guys can't come close to it's times.

Which brings me to the WRX. I hear most of you say, " Get the WRX, it has AWD and it handles in the rain. " but in the same breath, it seems that most of you just bought the WRX for 1/4mile times only. Help me understand this.

Im not bashing of flaming or acting like an ***. Id really like to know how you guys think AWD is so awesome, and will die to defend it and at the same time drive 2wd cars now......Including me.

Again, post no flame war attacks, just mature responses to help me understand this facination with AWD handling superiority(spl?) but use the car for straight line performance?

I say buy whatever car you like the best after you compare the two vehicles and you do some research. However, here is my horror story concerning a Neon. I had a 99 Neon R/T and liked it's performance, it was a blast to drive at SOLO II SCCA events and it fit my budget at the time. IMO, Dodges build quality is poor and at 30,000 miles, it felt like the seats were flat and I was seeing excessive wear on the interior. I also went through 4 head gaskets and 5 motor mounts, and the dealer said this was NORMAL on a R/T! All covered under warranty but what a PIA. Dodge makes some good vehicles but they do not last, just like all the other domestic manufactures.

Hey Scubaru, I don't think the majority of us only use our cars for straight line performance. It's just that the 1/4 is a measurable means of comparing cars. The regular joe can't just hook up a machine to measure cornering G's and compare cars. I've owned FWD, RWD, and now AWD. AWD by far inspires the most confidience when ripping turns. IMO, AWD is not so great in the tight confines of an auto-x track, but in real world conditions such as on the street, AWD helps a lot. BTW, I know of the black Neon in SCCA and yes he hands out major ***. I also know of a black 99 civic ex that hands out *** as well. My point is auto-x is more about seat time, experience, and car set-up than anything else....My .02 cents

Why would they? The bugeyes? the hoodscoop? Isn't the Mini Cooper S the same also just with fwd? The NON-4g63 DSM's(Eclipse GS etc etc) were 420a motors. Gee, I wonder what motor Neons had? 420a.

I race at every type of event, although I suck at the trackdays and AutoX.

The dragracing is available every weekend where AutoX is only montly. Also, like Steven says, it is a pretty accurate measure of the work you put into your car. It's also exciting a lot of the time when you line up against a car that should beat you under normal circumstance (ie, if the WRX were just a 4cyl car or if the WRX only had 2 wheels spinning.)

Most of us use the 1/4 mile to test / tune our Mod's. Since we don't have an AWD Dyno on island.

hey Vern, ... stop causing problems you big bully!!

and fwd does suck! ..... and right now, so does a non-running rwd!

I wish I could get back into a Subaru, ... awd is so sweet in all conditions. I wouldn't buy the neon b/c it's built by dodge, and quality is poor. Now if the Honda camp (for instance) put out something like the srt-4, .... it would be much more tempting to buy that car, ... b/c I believe the performance And Quality would be there.

and the whole 1/4 mi thing is just used as a 'measurement tool', that's really all us poor folk have here.

Poor folk? You and me Sean, you hit it on the head. Now I understand why you guys use the 1/4 mile, to see if all that money you spend on your car actually makes a difference. That actually makes sense now. Cool. And if you must that's Mr. Fat Bully to you! .

As for you car and mine, it has suck to know that we cant race doesnt it? Maybe there's next month's race. (ha ha, i keep telling myself that every month for the past year!!)

oh well.....-scu

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've made my decision and will be picking up a new car before the end of the month (maybe tomorrow).
