I'll start by saying that right now, my gut is telling me to wait, but my heart is telling me to go for it. I usually TRY to go with my gut, but this seems like a pretty good deal.

1993 US Legacy Turbo motor. $300. Here. He also has this other ad up.

I'd probably ship it to my folks house in Indiana, and then start my shopping for the strong internal stuff.

Pros: Inexpensive starting point on a closed deck block. Found one that I believe is hard to find (although, I don't know about how many I might be able to find on the mainland in junkyards and such.)

Cons: No way of knowing if the guy is shady and $400 is a lot of money. Won't be able to get to it for quite a while, and there would still be quite a bit of prep that will need to go into it.

It would be better to see the thing in person. I'd probably wait and get a motor when the time is right for you. Plus it will be sitting around for a while and that is never fun...

Darton makes oversized sleeves for the EJ20...
You don't need closed deck blocks with sleeves that strong.

Just to note. I'm still firmly in the research mode. I'll admit, that deal seemed pretty darned good which almost had me saying 'screw research'.

Anyhow, how much are Darton Sleeves? How much would I be looking at for someone to machine the block and don't you have to 'lip' the top of the cylinder? You know that the 2.2T engine has oil inlets, right?

you don't need a closed deck with strong sleeves, but if I build a motor, it will be at least a semi-closed deck.

Well, in my cost/benefit analysis mind, I wonder what further information I would need to compare a closed deck 2.2 stroked maybe to 2.4 engine (of course, that would require eating away at some of that nice, sturdy cylinder wall. Cost would probably be quite a bit less than the Darton sleeve.

On the other hand, from what Dom states, the Darton sleeve would probably be at least twice as strong, but cost a ********.

Because I know that I want to graduate to a larger turbo someday. Also, I believe that I agree with you in that with what power we're making, we are probably very near the ragged edge right now. Meaning, an little tweak here or there might could push the engine over the limit. Like, even though a pulley wouldn't create more hp, it would make the engine a little bit more efficient in utilizing it's hp and very well could be the last straw.

Gotcha... I knew that, but I meant what are you goals? That's the first thing to figure out when doing a new engine build...

Just so I'm not putting you on the spot: I've reached my goal. I've got a 12-second 4-banger that's fun as hell to drive, can stick in the corners (when I decide to hang 'em) and lugs all my computer stuff around all day long without complaining with 4-door convenience. It's <$30k (or right there) and can keep up with cars costing quite a bit more.

Mainly, the car is enjoyable for me to own/drive. That's where the real value/beauty is if you ask me.

I've had faster cars, but I haven't had a car that was as much fun as this one that could still be my daily driver. It's a great all around performer!

If I had to pick something that is (almost) a realistic goal I'd beef up the drivetrain somehow (STi RA 5-speed gearset most likely) so I'd feel comfortable taking it down the dragstrip every once in a while again.

I'd love to have more torque down low, but that'd change the whole nature of the beast and at that point I'd rather just have an STi or something that has subterranean grunt from the factory ('03 Cobra, Z06, etc.)

Is your Scooby going to be your play car where you just go "all out" with as much money as you can muster while you use the family SUV to cart the kid around in (that's where I see myself someday with an A/C Cobra replica!) or is this gonna stay your daily driver?

Just thinkin' about what I'd do myself if I wasn't so poor. I hope you end up going bonkers on this thing so we can see how far these guys can get pushed by the "everyman". I'm in your corner, Bro.
