Help me with gear ratios
Something I know nothing about.
What's the difference between:
Rallispec
Kaaz ratios: 3.167 (1st), 2.267 (2nd), 1.667 (3rd), 1.250 (4th), 0.964 (5th)
STi RA ratios: 3.083 (1st), 2.062 (2nd), 1.545 (3rd), 1.151 (4th), 0.825 (5th)
Gimme Gears
WRX Sport 3.0 (1st) 2.0 (2nd) 1.48 (3rd) 1.17 (4th) .963 (5th)
WRX Street 3.45 (1st) 1.94 (2nd) 1.36 (3rd) .96 (4th) .76 (5th)
WRX Sport/Street 3.0 (1st) 2.0 (2nd) 1.48 (3rd) 1.17 (4th) .76 (5th)
I'm guessing smaller first gear, a little taller 2nd-4th, and then a real tall 5th is a good idea.

I like the gimme gears sport/street except I think that unless you drop out of 4th REALLY high, you're not going to have a lot of push out on the freeway. Right now, I can pass another car just by stepping on it in 5th (If I'm starting around 65) with few probs. You are going to HAVE to drop into 4th in order to get around people.
If I had to choose (and I just might I'm grinding into 4th above 4k RPM. I think I trashed my synchro at the last track day) I would get the STi RA. It looks like a good balance between quicker shifts in the power band and a decent top end. BTW, I have video of me 130+. I love open country!

Thanks Greg.
Am I correct in assuming that all of these 'gear sets' will have to be installed in my bellhousing...ergo, a super-human task that I am not capable of....ergo, an assload of money towards an install at a tranny shop?

As far as your options, you did list Kaaz and Gimmie Gears. Both are good, and both are expensive(but I'm sure worth it) Of course you can't forget all the dog boxes out there as well, and the STi RA drivetrain too.
Of the bunch out there and with your config, I would think that the STi RA gears should be enough. They also wont break the bank all that much. First they are cryo-treated by Rallispec and (dont take my word for it) but the metallurgy in them is slightly better when it comes to STi gears. These particular gears are good up to around 300wHP(or so says Rallispec in one email I got from them)
I will tell you though that the syncro's are no different though from the US gear boxes, only the gears and ratio's are different.
Of course many people are putting in 6spd tranny's, and I'm sure you can get a used 5MT for about $1000-$1500 sans shipping.

Yeah, I saw the STI on Rallispec. About $1200. When you say used, do you mean Transmission complete? How hard will it be to put a complete transmission in?

If you guys can change a clutch/flywheel in a garage, you can do a tranny. Yes I mean a complete tranny. Just think of all the guys getting STi motor/drivetrain setups. Where does their stock stuff go? It goes on sale to offset their huge purchase of course
But look more into the Rallispec as well since they sell already built boxes(with core charges) and that would be something you could do yourself. Heck I hooked most of you fools up with Subaru manuals, you can do it!

Sorry about your tranny. At least your being honest about fixing the problem yourself.
Were you able to talk to the owner of the wrecked WRX? Or are you set in your decision to build a stronger performance tranny?

Tranny not so hard, gears in a trans = save it for the pros.

Chris, I'm not necessarily going to fix it myself. I will talk to Schuman, but I will be honest and upfront with them. No sense in trying to lie to them with what all happened while I was gone. I've already been pretty lucky with the parts they've repaired for me.
I spoke to the owner's friend and he said that he would talk to the guy. I don't know who he is, but he sounded like a nice guy.
On the other hand, I'd love to buy a stronger gearset, but I dont' think I could afford it, and I don't know about having the tranny shops here on the island install something into my bellhousing, especially since I doubt many of the shops work on AWD cars very often.

Just to be anally nitpicky (which is why ya'll love me, I'm sure!) but bellhousing != tranny case... Your clutch/flywheel/input shaft/release bearing/shift fork occupy some space in that bellhousing. Your gearset, synchros, etc. are in the transmission case.
Anyway, I'm sure all will work out for ya Pat! We'll figure something out. I don't think stabbing a trans. will be much harder than an uppipe...

bellhousing=big bell where engine meets tranny?
Conical shaped (transmission) housing=transmission case?
I will research a bit more in the future before I open my mouth to spout 'Pat's wisdom'.
Hey, what a coincidence. I just got an email from Brett Middleton.

Yes. That second picture you posted is of an automatic transmission without a separate bellhousing but the terminology remains the same.
