Help with coilover install!!
today i tried dropping my car with skunk2 coilovers but couldn't seem to get the stock shock to pop open...i know there's a tool called a shock absorber tool that you can use but couldn't find a store that sells em...only place i could find it in was at car quest but it wasn't a 17mm...is there anywhere i can find that tool in 17mm? or is there anyone who can lend it to me for a day? also, some help with install would be greatly appreciated

Do you have skunk2 coilovers or skunk2 coil sleeves? I think you need a spring compress or something for the sleeves (correct me if I'm wrong guys).

sleeve coilovers = not true coilovers in that it just a sleeve-over. its just for dropping your car and not driving aggressively since that in sleeve coilovers such as Ground Control and Skunk2 will rotate out of the springs, therefore making it slip. This will cause a clunking noise but thats not what you should be worried about. If you take a hard corner with "sleeve-coilovers" the plates will shift causing a sudden jolt on your suspension and which in turn, can lift your wheel up and therefore losing traction and lose control.
Sleeve coilovers is all show no go, think of it as a big *** body kit that scrapes everywhere and turns your aerodynamics of your car into a brick. Just plain rice in my opinion. You have a WRX, its made for corners, not show.

Ha in3g_wrx i got your pm. you don't need a special tool to get the strut top off but you will need a spring compressor if you want and if you don't mind waiting till this weekend i can help you. i am a Marine on KMCB and i did my work over there and we can do work there but you can't bring your car, only bring the struts and of course your self and long pants and a sleeved shirt + sneakers. if we do do it this weekend it would be Sat. morniong at like 10:00 am let me know if this is cool.

what the hell is boom talking about with the coilover sleeves???
I suppose that all the Race cars that use Ground Control's coilovers and Skunk 2's coilovers are ****ty?
Older cars sometimes only have a choice of the Ground Controls, they work perfectly fine for them.
I would always advise people on going ahead with the true coilover setup, but sometimes it's not neccesary, not an option, ... or unaffordable.
these aren't just some "Max Speed" junk, or ebay special uppipe (right Greg?

what the hell am i talking about? its the truth. numerous people have LOST control while using sleeve coilovers including myself. sleeve coilovers are FINE if you actually drive like a grandma
i used to own a 2nd gen dsm and had skunk2 coilovers when it came with the car. the rears would FALL out of perch coming out of a driveway and then further down the road, it would snap back into place if i hit a bump or so. what if you took a hard turn with it. you're screwed. thats the truth about them and i've heard the same stories everywhere. hell, i ever reinstalled them 3 times before i gave up and purchased Tokico's struts+springs.
oh i'm sorry, sean, the skunk2 car is a RACE car right...do you really THINK its using the SAME coilovers as sold in the skunk2 consumer line of INTEGRA parts? I don't think so. you can have GREAT setups if you set your suspension right with a sleeve coilover system which will sooner or later cost you as much as a true coilover system anyway. why bother? its CONSUMER LINE not their race items.
