HELP...After market exhaust
We're new Subaru owners and we bought a PowerTone universal muffler from Larry's. Now that we have it on we realized it was a BIG mistake, we lost a lot of power...what should we do to fix it? We bought a stock 2002 WRX and this is the first thing that we put on it.

the only reason why i went to a muffler shop is to have them weld on a straight pipe in place of my axle back. sorry to hear of your mistake. hopefully you can put it back to stock... if not in a week or so i will have an extra oem STi exaust system available.

hmm .. is it a straight-through design ?
I don't see why you would lose power, is it that bad?
If the muffler is straight-through and the piping is the right size (axle-back) you shouldn't lose any power. Hmm .. weird.
If they chopped off your stock muffler and just welded the new one on, the only thing you could do is buy another stock axleback section..

how the heck do you lose power? is this axle back?
take that exhaust off and buy a real exhaust, check out the review section of this club.
or just pick up an oem from someone.
you can try and sell the one you bought, but you might be looking at a loss of $ in this case.
do some research on parts before you buy them, hopefully it will save you trouble

What may seem like a loss in power may actually not be. With less backpressure you usually have less torque (feels slower) in the lower rpm's but at middle to upper rpm's your power improves. However, this is usually the case only with N/A cars. *shrug*

"Powertone says its patented open-chamber-design mufflers provide an 8 to 10 percent increase in horsepower, with improved throttle response and better gas mileage."
I don't really see how a straight through muffler would hinder performance...

Never buy universal exhausts. You pay for what you get and there's a reason why good exhausts cost so much, they're are tuned for each specific car and made to fit(no welding).

I can't see how you would loose power if you've got more free flowing exhaust. Granted, Universals are not the way to go, but more flow means quicker spool up. You may have lost bottom end torque, but overall power should be better if not the same, even w/ a power tone. Unless you went to a more restrictive set up. The best fix is to spend the money and get something good!
