yea, spring pins. i was just going to ask whether or not they were still there (tranny side) or damaged. other than that id say either interal tranny issues (shot bearing?) or worn/ broken suspension component.
i am by no means no tranny or suspension expert. as im sure u know, dont be rippin ur **** apart cuz i or someone told u it was X cause of problem. just puttin it out there. i recently got bitten in the *** at work for not "covering my ***" lol.
back to OP. those are the only two things i can think of. also, it came loose....just loose and rattling around or straight dropped to the ground? in which case, ur springs pins are missing or u somehow snapped the tranny spindle.
goodluck with fix

Yeah, there should be a pin holding the shaft onto the stub that comes off the transmission. Here are some pictures from the FSM for an 02 wrx 5-speed, I believe the front axles are same on this car and yours. I'm not 100% on it being the same part, but the pin we are talking about should be in almost the same spot either way.
In this picture you can see the spot where the pin goes (vertical channel) through the far right end of the axle.
In this exploded view the spring pin in question is component #2 near the top left side.
This last image shows the install/removal method for said pin.
