Question Greetings... Moving to Hawaii in the future...

Hi all,

Not Subie related, but I thought this would be a good place to start. I apparently posted to the 'wrong' site before... haha

I'm probably moving to the Honolulu area next year with my Japanese girlfriend. I was hoping someone could give me advice as far as jobs and so on. I have 5 years in multimedia/educational software, but will have been living in Japan as an English teacher for 4 years. I hope to have business level Japanese by the time I leave here. What kind of job prospects would I have? I have a year to prepare.

I'm studying Japanese hard, but if there is some kind of tech job where I could get a certificate for online or something...

Any tips would GREATLY be appreciated... And if you are familiar with work visas for Japanese it would also be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend went to college in Hawaii and was formally a cruise director there.

You can find me on ICQ/AIM: 150905 or MSN (PM me).

THANKS!!!!
Chims/Jeff

hey man! HAPPY THAT YOU'RE ON YOUR WAY!

Will you bring us some JDM parts?

Here's your info...

For your job outlook:
1. You look pretty good with that Bus Japanese...do you wanna stay in software or just do something with the language stuff?
2. If you wanna do something primarily related to your japanese skills...you should check up with Kyo-ya (they're the biggest and most important Japanese owned and operated companies in HI). They own some of the Sheraton hotels and other interests in HI and I think that they're always looking for language assistance for their executive operations.
3. You'll really have an advantage over non-japanese speaking applicants at any Hotel or Travel Agency if you like that stuff.
4. You could teach japanese if you're that proficient but the money might suck unless you work at JAIMS or something!

For your GF:
1. NCL is hiring...dunno for what positions but they just brought a new ship here.
2. Otherwise any of the ones I just wrote.

Need to give a little more background unto WHAT you exactly want to do.

Thanks a lot...

I might have seniority over the other Jeffs... I've been on this board for more than 4 years or so maybe, but I tend to stick to N****C forums these days... haha I miss my RS!!!

Well, I wouldn't mind another computer job, but I came out to Japan because I wanted to get away from desk jobs. I have to make a living... As long as it's over $30k and interesting, I'm ok... but of course more mulla is a lot better... I want to have enough cash for a fun car and still travel and save some. I want a lot.

For computers, I used to work as a multimedia developer. I've been out of the game for a while, so I'd have to go back to at least junior level, but I'm experienced in many platforms. It wouldn't take much time for me to catch up.

Working for travel /tour agencies or other businesses with my Japanese skills would be cool, as long as the money was decent. I want to be able to get around and live comfortably.

I have a lot of interests, so I'm open to all sorts of jobs. I'm more of a weekend warrior than work-a-holic.

Yeah... And picking up parts here is no problem. There is a large Subie dealer near my office here. And I could find Zero Sports and other stuff easily... I still have catalogs from the last Tokyo Motor Show.

Ooooooh Zero Sports....yum yum!

When you coming? We'll make a list!

I probably want the air splitter and front grill...maybe a front lip!

Well...teachers make $32K starting here in HI if you go public school...not so many opportunities for weekend warrior types of work...most of that is taken by college students.

Maybe some entrepreneur types of things but those are iffy.

Looks like tourism industry is the best bet... Guessing that means the Honolulu area.

It will be about a year before the move, but I may take a little scouting trip before then. Or I expect my GF to visit there this winter. Maybe should could bring a suitcase full of stuff if I ask nicely. haha

Well, it will probably be about a year until I can come... for good anyway.

But I might want to get a small crate to ship some things with me... Depending on the size, I suppose I could slip some JDM parts in there. I'll keep you guys posted. That's a little research I'm not worrying about yet. I'm sure I'll be asking you guys for good garages and body shops when I'm ready to go.

And any more ideas of where to get a good paying tourism related job would be appreciated. What's the best place to watch? Monster.com, Honolulu Advertiser, etc?

Domo arigato!

Jeff
