Got a transmission question??
So I am trying to get back into the Suby scene on a budget and I found a 02 WRX that has pretty low miles for the year only problems are a dent in one of the fenders and the transmission is fawked. Now the problem is the shift linkage is stuck in second gear but the trans is acting like it is in neutral. Now I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions as to what it might be or does the trans need to be replaced. The guy said his dad was driving it and while getting on the highway shifting into second gear this happened and now the car sits and the guy does not have the cash to fix it he is saying the trans need to be replaced.

2nd gear is likely shredded. It's pretty common. Probably been abused. Buy THIS ONE instead.
I would snap it up if it were stupid cheap, but then again, I have a spare tranny. Since you're asking the question, you really don't want to deal with it.

Jeremiah...I thought you went and got another STi after getting rid of the Acura (I think you had a TSX?)?
If you gotta get new gears I would go PPG straight cut 1-2 and regular 3-5. Those things are beastly.

i think he's on a budget so the cheapest way would be to simply find a used trans and throw that in. you probably won't have trouble finding one and you can do the work yourself. GL
